Lamb to Slaughter

Lamb to the Slaughter

You had read the story 'Lamb to the Slaughter' and did answer a few questions in class. Those who have not read it, click on the above link and read it.

Some of you might have seen the movie version also. In this post you will have to answer the following questions based on the story.

1. Why is the title of the story important? What does it mean?

2. Explain why this murder could be called as 'perfect murder'.

3. How does a male stereotype of women work to Mary's advantage in her story?

4. Give two other examples for irony in the story apart from the given example.
(Example: 'perfect' wife kills her husband)

5. Mary is on trial for the murder of her husband.  The question is not whether she killed him, but why?  What is your perception of Mary’s guilt?  Was the murder premeditated?   Was she caught up in the moment?  Or was she temporarily insane, therefore not responsible for her actions?  You are a Junior District Attorney and are responsible for advising your supervisor in this case.  Based on the evidence in this story, of what type of homicide is Mary guilty of?   Write a report to your supervisor analyzing the evidence and determining what the charge should be.  Make sure to support your assertions with evidence from the text.

6. Write Mary's death bed confession about the incident. What do you think her perception of events is?  Support any opinions with textual evidence.

Now see Alfred Hitchcock version of the same story for another interpretation. Click on the link to see the movie version
