ReplyDeleteChildren should never get to know about stereotyping and stuff... If they never get to know about that, then stereotyping won't be there...
ReplyDeleteWe can't stop stereotyping and discrimination immediately... To stop it completely it will take hundreds of years... Then only we can cut the root of discrimination and stereotyping...
ReplyDeleteMy Personal Experience :
ReplyDeleteI haven't gone through such stereotyping and discrimination. But one thing is often I get mocked by my height. I am 6'3'' and grow beard. People say that I look like an uncle/elder person and sometimes even say that it will be very difficult to find a girl for me. I know this isn't serious as getting discriminated by colour and gender. But still I thought of sharing it.
Happy to know that you didnt experience severe discrimination. even the mocking of height is not fair to you and at times troubling.
DeleteHello.I'm Aparna.G(2018103515)
ReplyDeleteThese gender stereotypes are really complicated and mainly originate from our own local traditions and culture.Like in the video people generally come to the quick assumption that teachers and nurses are women and that pilots, firefighters and military officers are men. This is generally because the parents encourage their children to pursue only those specified careers. People are stereotyped not only for their profession but also for their general behavior. For example women are supposed to be accommodating and emotional, while the men are expected to be self-confident and aggressive.
My personal experiences:
I have a friend who got admission in the National University of Singapore.Coming from a very wealthy family, spending nearly 60-70 lakhs for her Undergraduate education was not much big of a deal for her family. But since she is a girl, they thought that it would be "wiser" to spend the same amount of money for her marriage rather than her education. Moreover they felt that it would ne difficult for a girl to take care of herself in a foreign land.So because of this judgement the girl is now not studying in NUS. Whereas her younger brother has now been admitted into the Massachusetts Institute of technology in Boston just because they her parents are convinced that he could survive there in an unknown country alone!
The first step to put an end to these stereotypes is in the hands of the parents. The parents must stop discriminating among their children. The young children should be allowed to pursue what they want.
Coming to Racism, the most common way to discriminate people is by their appearance.A receptionist or a personal assistant is always expected to be a girl and not any other gender. Often a person's appearance is preferred over the person's intelligence and skills. When it comes to a girl, people generally expect her tonbe fair and have a slim figure. In many countries the LGBT individuals are often not accepted by their families and friends and are blamed for something which is literally nobody's fault!!.
Removing stereotypes and racism is very difficult but is not impossible.Small small steps in our day to day lives can make a big change!!
Beautifully written! Your friend's tale is really depressing as it happened in the present times. Many families are breaking this glass ceiling. My own friend's son is studying in chennai college while his sister is trying to join NUS and parents are helping all they could. discriminating based on skin color is common in our country
