ReplyDeleteCULTURE vs MODERNIZATION
ReplyDeleteFirst of all,”modernization” is, as the first participant said ,adopting modern ways and ideas for the betterment of society. It is a transition for our country’s progress and it does’nt mean rejecting our own traditions and cultures,Then the other person said that if he wears a dhoti and walks on the road he would be mocked ,but this is not at all relevant to modernization,Just by wearing modern outfits one cannot be called modern. We often misinterpret modernization as imitating western styles and cultures.
This is actually termed as westernization.I don’t believe that modernity is related to his/her way of dressing up.
I strongly disagree with the other woman (Sharon Rebecca)’s opinions. She said that the women of the past wore sarees which covered their entire bodies and women of today are wearing sarees with sleeveless blouses.Again, here, modernization is related to change in the way of dressing. Also she said that a woman wears a mangalsutra just to show that she belongs to someone. This is deniable ,being a woman herself, how could she refer women as “properties” of men.
Later she defined Indian culture as where women were secured and protected by their spouses. But why would we need security ,in what way we are less superior to men?Why could not we protect ourselves?
On the whole, the gd was very well conducted. As said before,I appreciate the first participant who initiated the discussion with a good definition of “modernisaton”.As far as the group dynamics are concerned, the group had good cooperation with each other, allowed each other to express his/her views clearly. Each member participated actively, except for one or two.Everyone was audible and also spoke fluently. They also generated a lot of contents during the gd.
Though they covered a wide range of subtopics ,I personally feel that they should have been more coherent and relevant to the main topic that was given to them. They could have talked more about how modernization had paved way for development in our country and how it did not affect our culture, about the history of modernization and they could have brought out various examples and instances.I feel that they had deviated from the topic in the course of discussion.
Thank You

ReplyDeleteI believe modernization is an inevitable aspect of human civilization. Imagine a life without modernization, we would all still be in the stone age probably thriving as hunter-gatherers. The mentality of modernization is one of the most crucial traits that can solve problems efficiently, bring order and discard values that no longer hold true to the best interests of humanity and it's progression. And by mentality, I mean, being tolerant to the acceptance of newer ethical practices (think about abolition of child marriage, honor killing) and being open to the appreciation of newer forms of art (eg: compare present-generation music to older ones) and readily welcome technology.
One guy pointed out that how foreign products hinder the indigenous industries from flourishing. This actually entertains the idea of abstaining the use of foreign products. But what good does it lead to? Does this bring economic development or bring enormous increase in GDP? Actually, it worsens the situations and reduces the quality. Think about countries like south korea, they don't care about this thing. Instead, they refine their products worthy enough to be acclaimed internationally and attract global market.. Indians shouldn't fear about this situation, instead we should focus on bringing seamless supremacy in our products that we produce. Only then, our country will be more developed.
One guy interfered religion with modernization. Atheistic or theistic, at the end, what truly matters is in being humane in our morals. There are theistic practices that are totally barbaric and there are kinder people who follow atheism. Here, they twist religion with modernization which is totally irrelevant.
I was actually annoyed by Rebecca's points which were condescending and quite frankly irrelevant. Her viewpoints were anti-feminism in every way. Anyway, the fact that she considers woman as a property of her spouse is misogynistic and truly shocking to know that she believes this as a woman herself. People should wear whatever they feel comfortable and whichever they like. Safety of women doesn't come from the attire she wears instead from a society that doesn't objectify women.
I appreciate Santosh's point. He said sometimes culture could make us live in a box that society puts us in.
I also believe that modernization is not about mocking or disregarding Indian traditions like festival, religion, heritage and history, etc. But it's people's choice whether they follow it or not. No one should be judged for holding onto traditions and no one should consider themselves as superior if they adopt or incline towards westernization. We should never forget about our roots and core moral values (kind to people and animals, being loyal to loved one and so on) , at the same time, be open-minded enough to modify or change certain ideas.
The discussion could have been more topic-centric. Everyone articulated their thoughts well and it was interesting.

ReplyDeleteIt is a topic based GD on "culture vs modernization" . The first person who initiated the GD on this topic stated a good definition for modernization. She stated that modernization does not intervene with the traditional values whereas it is "process for our progress". Which according to me is a right view on modernization. And the one who spoke about child marriage, sathi etc. said that these cruel practices has been reduced due to modernization. Which is also right in my point of view. Also he stated that "modernization brings new good". But I won't agree with the second point because modernization won't bring only advantages it also brings more disadvantages to the society and the world. Coming to the points of clothing. I won't agree with all the views about clothing. Because wearing modern clothes doesnot mean we are forgetting tradition. It is related to our comfort. We dress for our comfort. They also shared a good view about culture that culture is not constant and it changes from time to time which is undeniably a truth.
They also mentioned good points about modernization like universal brotherhood, advancement in transportation, more health benefits, communication over long distance, eradicating illiteracy and creating a better world with out caste. They also said that modernization has its significance in developing various employment sector. for example, Introduction of truck and other machines for agricultural benefits. Which is a good view.
Overall, all the speakers expressed their views. Everyone got their own chances and they utilised it very well. In the middle of the GD they spoke about some other topics that are not related to the given topic. Which they might have been avoided. But the real question for GD is
"are we sacrificing culture in the name of modernization? ". But these speakers expressed their views on "culture vs modernization ". Which is somewhat related to original topic but not very accurate. But on the topic"culture vs modernization"they mostly covered all the points in the given time. If they were not conversing about unrelated things they might have covered even more points in the given time.
-Thank you

ReplyDeletePeople usually misinterpret modernization with westernization, which in reality are different. Westernization is a process of imitating western countries by the non-western countries.Westernization is about the adoption of western values whereas modernization is a modification or a change which offers the preservation of the past.It is really necessary to modernize to compete in this highly competitive world.Modernization involves changes not only at the institutional level but also a fundamental change at the personal level. It involves a change in modes of thinking, beliefs, opinions, attitudes, actions and also a change in the social structure from a closed conservative society to a classless, casteless society in which the individual’s status depends not on his birth but on his personal achievements.
I think the group discussion was conducted well and the participants introduced many subtopics. but some of the participants expressed their opinion thinking that modernization is closely related to westernization. There were many relevant points too.At some point, culture tends to bring down our development but sometimes we are just forced to adapt to our environment. And regarding another subtopic involving the quality of indian products, i think there are both positives and negatives to it. Only if we are ready to modernize,we can improve the quality of our products and it is really necessary to compete with other countries which could be a pathway to our development.
Also another participant gave a relevant point regarding agriculture. It was modernization which made agriculture easier for the farmers.but i strongly disagree with the anti-feminist points given by a participant. She is focused more on westernization rather than modernization.Regarding clothes , i think people should wear what makes them comfortable and they should not be judged for it.
Overall,i think they did a pretty good job and it would be better if some of the irrelevant points were avoided.
DOES DEVELOPMENT OF MODERNISATION AFFECTS CULTURAL HERITAGE.. first of all,as the first active speaker said it was really a fortune to have a GD on this topic, since it's much more relevant to today's current society and needed thing. As a evaluator, based on the criteria for evaluation of GD as per mentioned in the above material,i would suggest it was really a good GD since there was an equal participance of each and every participant, and moreover the language of the participants is fluent, clear, polite and enough audible.I also encourage the participants in the way of no interruptions occurs between the speech and opposition occurs at the correct specific time and the overall tone and voice of each and every participant is very fair. The way of justification and support to their point of perspection throught the examples and facts is very good and confidential and especially the listening of each and every participant is very fair. The all of the above things leads to good factors, but there also occurs some negative factors in this GD....
ReplyDeleteSome of them like the gd should have the special criteria of broad range of prespective, but as in my view i would suggest that this GD can much more include some points of prespection, and it is a better way to convey the information & enhance communication through body language at standing, since the body language at standing position is far better than sitting position and this GD doesn't involve any criteria of group roles,as there is no group leader, notetaker, devil's advocater and so on.., which doesn't provide the best tailoring of the GD and it would be better if some points relevant to outside the topic is avoided.
I also have some agreements and disagreements with some points of the participants and my classmates. As i strongly disagree the pragalya's point about way of dressing..since the modern development also includes the way of dressing which is termed as westernization by her
and the westernization is also a sub-branch of modernization provided by the analysis of Greater_kashmir.And i would like to support to a participant point who conveys that all modernization kills agriculture and by the here of 2040 or 2050,we will have a tablet of protein and vitamins which stands by present generation proof as nowadays the rice is full of starch and no proteins and carbohydrates, which is also mentioned by another participant and i also agree to the point that modernization leads to development of transports and abolision of sati and child marriage. As you could understand in my way of review, that modernization affects culture or not,it depends upon the matter and prespection,so it leads to summarizing and consensus, this is not applicable to this GD,because here the conclusion is arrived by a single participant at a single unit of time, this makes a negative prespective about GD.
Finally, this GD is too informative and interesting...

The topic given for the group discussion was "Are we sacrificing culture in the name of modernisation"
The conclusion the group arrived at was we can't stop progress or development and must accept it as it comes, but we must learn to incorporate our culture in the modern lifestyle, which is very acceptable.
However, through the course of discussion there were several points that were considered that lacked relevance to the topic and very often a deviation could be observed.
Generalising the whole discussion, the positives and negatives of modernisation was stated very clearly. But there was very little light shed on the topic at hand, that is, if we are progressing putting our culture at stake. A few good points such as modernisation has helped culture evolve into something more practicable, for example, due to abolition of sati, the caste system. Modernisation has helped create a world that's more liberal and free of discrimination. Another good point was modernisation exposes you to many new ideologies that you can choose what you believe in and not be driven by what's handed down to you, be it even with religion.
The group pointed out the negative impacts of modernisation too. They right emphasised that modernisation disregards our indeginous ways of living. Increased influence and admiration of the west makes us ignore or rather disrespect our own values.
It felt like the group led the discussion more on whether or not we need modernisation and said very little about it's effect on culture.
Interms of content, several points were considered, some relevant and some very irrelevant to the topic. For instance, talking about unemployment has nothing to do with losing out on culture .
Several subtopics were considered however nothing led to a discussion largely on the topic .
The group dynamics was very good. There was active participation from most. They took turns naturally and led the discussion very formally . Apart from two members, everyone took many turns and suggested many new ideas to discuss on, they asked questions, opposed certain ideas, guarded off deviation, and added to someone else's points. There was once when the group largely opposed against a dark by a fellow member when the discussion seemed rather chaotic as they spoke out of turn but it rested back almost immediately to proceed smoothly.
The body language of all the participants must be appreciated. They all maintained eye contact and were firm as they spoke. No one looked anxious or disinterested.
The language used by the participants was simple and formal. Everyone could clearly understand what another member was trying to put forth. There was effective communication between everyone.
The organisation was fairly okay. The group discussion started by stating how we look at modernisation and moved onto quoting instances where we have adopted modern ways of life giving up our very own culture. There was a minimal discussion on how giving up some old cultural ideals benefits the society at large. But soon, the discussion shifted to focus on merits of modernisation. I would say the discussion was not organised interms of selecting subtopics of relevance.
Individual participation must be appreciated. Most of them spoke very well.
The girl who spoke first, the boy next to her and the boy who sat at the left most position made very relevant points.
The others contributed to the discussion but didn't perceive the essence of the topics and focussed largely on whether or not modernisation helps.
Rebecca made controversial points on how women are losing out on culture and ethics in a way of becoming modern. The points had no relevance and were rather very incorrect to state as the rest of the group pointed out.
Overall, the group discussion did highlight few points that are significant to the topic but mostly dealt with irrelevant and rather incoherent ideas.
Hi!
ReplyDeleteThis is from 2018103012.
First of all, the topic brought up in the scenario is "CULTURE VS MODERNIZATION".In my point of view, here only the culture can be modernised and we cannot to stick to the traditional culture. We too had a discussion related to this in our class ,in which my friend Kulandhai Swamy questioned "WHAT IS THE USE OF CULTURE?". Thinking like a progressive youth of the nation, I agree to his question.everyone in the group defined modernization, but I beleive that modernization is something that is made for the welfare of the people constructively irrespective of its drawbacks. A girl in the gang, keep on speaking about the welfare of women with the culture, but that's not only the topic is. She add on some irrelevant points too. I feel that we can't imagine a life without modern technology. Coming to the point, modernization- technology covers a lot. As they discussed, we can see a good progress in the industrialisation, civilization and agriculture in the modern culture. Its told that we are copying others technology. Its a bullshit. We,INDIANS analyse whether theirs can be implemented or not and to do it if its right and to fit to a new technology it is not. Unfortunately, theirs is always right and implemented, which is an ugly truth.
A girl told that in ancient times, women use to wear sarees which covers her all body parts. This happened because women were supposed to be like that in the past. They have no freedom. With comparing to other countries like USA, its told a men or women have 2 or more hsubands/wives which doesn't suit INDIA, but the thing is we are like under house arrest(confined to a limit in such situations),as a guy answered. They were talking about cars. for example, in my dad's period, scooty named ACTIVA were sold to a limit since there is no advertisement about that brand. So only a few opted due to the factors like great milage,self-start irrespective of the variety. All over tamilnadu, it goes nearly 30 to 50. but now, only those scooties are moving successfully. Even youngsters go to it. What is the reason???
The answer is the variety, style, executive look etc., brought by the modernisation as they discussed. Like a coin with 2 sides, culture and technology has its own negative and positive impacts. If we come to the modern technology, how it can be used (whether for good or bad) surely depends on the mentality of the men/women authorising it. It differs from each other(thinking point of view). But in practice, we can't bring back our indian culture again and thinking about this and trying to implement is impossible. why this is not possible? because people living all over INDIA were strictly selfish and think only about them. As a joke, a nice proverb comes to my mind
which is "NOTHING IS IMPOSSIBLE" which doesn't suit here at all. For example, let's arrange a meeting and gather people. let the impacts of technology be spoken. Do you think will anyone comes front and stand with you? Sadly no one comes and say the meeting organiser(one who beleives that proverb strongly which is not me exactly) a fool. This a man/women 's natural mentality which cannot be changed forever. I encourage the people who are strong-minded that it can be changed. But reality sucks!!!
Thereby, I conclude that adapting ourselves to the modernisation is the best.
The group discussion is mind- blowing and they covered almost every points. I learned the aspects of it .
THANK YOU.
ARE WE SACRIFICING OUR CULTURE IN THE NAME OF MODERNISATION .
ReplyDeleteThe act of starting the Group discussion by giving a brief definition on the topic would have given a clear idea about the topic to the participants and helped to think better . But this must be done by a person who is confident on his definition or it may lead to misunderstanding and confusions among the participants over the topic . There initially seemed to be some difficulty with the girl who spoke first on delivering her thoughts and opinions . This may be because she didn't have time to chooseof words and ideas . Hence starting the group discussion needs the skill of "processing opinions fast ". When a participant opposes the claim kept by other participants and if this cycle goes on , it broadens the area of the topic , thinking , and helps the participants to acquire and think over other ideas without prevailing on the same repeated opinions. The various examples , illustrations given and the comparisons made helps both the viewer and also the speskers to understand how conditions have changed and the developments in the present . The act of he/she asking rhetorical questions and giving the answer himself/herself without expecting the answer makes the listeners to think over not only only question but also the correctness of the given answer . The different opinions which are given by the people involved in a group discussion helps themselves to see how diverse the world is and how other people views differ . Since the speakers maintained a good and polite tone , made their points precise , listened and responded to the participants actively and wisely , the group discussion proved to be peaceful , fruitful and thoughtful for not only the participants but also for the viewers .
The skill of critical thinking plays a very important role in a Group discussion . The speakers here have critically analyzed the opinions of the fellow participants by thinking whether
1.The opinions are logical .
2. Will they be applicable for the present society .
3. The past happenings and personal experiences of themselves and
4. Whether they are valid.
Though, there were a lot of sub topics spoken about , some were relevant to the topic . So , every individual participant must concentrate on sticking to the topic in a group discussion unless he/she is asked to . The use of polite english is important and in the given group discussion , the participants have used a polite language without conflicts .
The conclusion arrived at the end i.e. we cannot stop modernization but we must learn/ train ourselves to blend our culture in the midst of modernization was logically drawn was the opinion of majority of participants.
The grop discussion was excellent to watch and hope it would have been useful for the participants too.
The topic "are we sacrificing culture in the name of modernization?" is actually a very interesting topic. The GD is nice but it is not worthy for 20 minutes.Actually it is very boring for me.Only three or four actively participated in the discussion.Others were idle for most of the time."Sharon Rebecca"discussed only about "women in the Indian society" for most of her time. But her point is somehow irrelevant. The problems women facing today is because of westernization not modernization. These two terms are analogous to update and upgrade.Next Speaking about Agriculture it is not 'modernization' that degraded it.In my point of view modernization supported agriculture a lot. Degradation of Agriculture is because of irregular rainfall, water scarcity etc. Even Recently our college removed Agriculture from the course list so that we cannot say that our college is modernised. Its something different. And we cannot say that invasion of foreign car industries destroyed the Indian brands. It is actually "survival of the fittest".
ReplyDelete"Replacement of foods by tablets" is the point I liked in the entire discussion. They were not giving points on the topic. They circled around the topic and no points were discussed in depth about the topic.
My conclusion is if all minds actively participated in the topic the it would have become more interesting.
The topic about which the group is discussing is 'Are we sacrificing our Culture in the name of Modernisation?'... First of all the participants make clear explanation of Modernisation... In short the participant says that the term modernisation “does not denote any philosophy or movement(a common misconception...), but it only symbolises a process of change. In fact, “Modernisation” is understood as a process which indicates the adoption of the modern ways of life and values'”. The term was being used previously to refer only “to change in economy and its related effect on social values and practices”.First the participants split themselves and one set of people are putting forth the advantages that the modernisation has brought that has made of lives more comfortable... and another group opposing it... It can been seen at times that they deviate from the main topic... some times illogical also... So at times instead of
ReplyDeleteexplaining how modernisation has made our lives better.. they speak how some of our bad customs like devadasi system was abolished only because of modernisation... sometimes they owe it to the Britishers... So this Group discussion was a good one.. the participants were good and would have been excellent if they hadn't deviated from the main topic at times... Personally i got to more statistical information from the participants and got to know about many more things... So it was worth my time... but my conclusion on the topic is.. Modernisation should not be completely ignored in the name of protecting our culture... We should accept the changes that occur daily and cherish our ancesteral past and our living present also and in doing so.. forming a pleasant path of our future generations..

ReplyDeleteAs Indians , we are confusing modernization with westernization ! Just like everyone of us , I welcome modernization in our lives . But when you ask people how would you like to see a developed India in the future , the answer would be that I want India to become like the USA. That is what I'm feeling bad about. I feel that the only thing that separates India from the rest of the world is our culture and heritage.
When the west looking upon India and trying to adopt some aspects of our culture , we are looking upon the west to adopt their lifestyles . Just a simple thing to explain this fact , there are so many yoga and yogic learning centres all over the west and it is influencing a whole lot of people . But I'm sure a lot of Indians don't even know that we are the kings of Yoga. The bottom line is that the mindset of our own people towards our own culture should change drastically so that it is preserved !

Group discussion is basically done to arrive at “out of the box” ideas or conclusions on any topic. It act as a medium or platform where one can put forth their ideas and thoughts in relation with the provided topic or motion. In the video given, a group of people brainstorm on the topic – influence of modernization on culture.
People have different opinions regarding most topics - conflicting opinions, neutral opinions and even the same opinions. However, most conversations in today's world does not allow one to express the ideas fully due to restrictions and fear. A group discussion is an activity that is conducted to overcome this barrier. And the supplied video is a really good example of how a group discussion works and what is expected from in a group discussion.
First and foremost, the whole point of the group discussion is to express your views. The group discussion given did involve participation from all members, albeit some were more active than others. The discussion started off with a proper introduction where a member defined what modernization is and the conversation picked up from there. Although the conclusion was sub-par, it was satisfactory.
Each individual had something to say about the topic(effect of modernization on Indian culture) ranging from moral, economic, religious ,abolition of sati and ethical perspectives. Few of them argued that the changes that modernization brought about was positive in our country as it completely abolished certain traditional practices such as sati by spreading awareness of the evil of such a violent tradition.
There were still few who argued that modernization ruined India's identity as the people are trying to imitate Western culture instead of holding onto the rich diverse culture that our country has been built on. Fashion and women rights were brought to light which seemed like relevant topics. However, other members argued the relevancy of this subtopic as it didn't provide an substantial input to the topic.
I disagree with some of the facts that were said, especially the one regarding the independency of women in the past being ruined by modernization. I feel like the group should have addressed that point with more levity.
Some members were really critical(I think his name was Santosh, pink shirt) with their responses and provided apt examples to support their arguments.
Unfortunately, a pattern was noticed where two to three of the members were debating back and forth while the rest of the group took up a spectator seat. A moderator and initiator was clearly set between the members.
Some instances of interruptions were noted, but they were carried out formally and hence did not come out as rude.
The conclusion didn't seem up to the standards as no where through the discussion do they mention a hand in hand development of both culture and modernization. The discussion was more centered on the pros and cons of both the topics. The conclusion was an ideal answer but I do not feel that the given conclusion truly concluded the discussion they had.
Finally, the most appealing part of this discussion was the fact that it seemed completely natural and did not seem forced. They had an organized approach but it didn't seem scripted.
Overall, it was a positive discussion as most issues were addressed. So thereby implying that we must create our own opportunities to express ourselves. I hope and believe that our discussions will adapt and improve on this provided example..

The topic of this group discussion is “ Are we sacrificing our culture in the name of modernisation” which is a good one and actually a much needed discussion for current society.
I like the way how one girl defines modernisation as one which doesn’t interpret with cultural values. They pointed out cruel things which happened at the past such as Child Marriage, Sati etc. These things were abolished due to modernisation. Modernisation brought the invention of vehicles which replaced the old bullock carts. There were wars caused due to religion back in those days. But now as a result of modernisation most of the people forget about religion and stuff. As a result of modernisation, democracy came into existence which gives us freedom. Communication has developed only because of modernisation. One guy brought out the agriculture topic which is an essential topic to discuss. People have stopped doing agriculture and have started moving cities. One day, definitely the IT industry will see its peak and then start to deteriorate and people will come back to agriculture.
One of the girls kept talking about women stuff which I felt a bit annoying. She never spoke about anything else. Other than that it was a good discussion. Everyone one of them waited for their turn to speak. Even if they wanted to interrupt someone while speaking, they politely interrupted. Their body language wasn’t rude and each one of them gave attention and listened when others spoke.
In conclusion, indeed the world will keep changing. What I think is to improve our day-to-day life, we should use modernisation in a right way without affecting our cultural values.
THANK YOU!!!

The group debated about weather modernisation is affecting is affecting the ancient tradition or destroying it.most of the people older generation often complain about their children or their grandchildren not following the cultural methods or tradition.
Most of the women from older generation look at girls wearing modern clothing and remark 'they are insulting their culture'.This perspective is completely wrong .just because people from current generation are adapting to modern society doesint mean that they are forgetting their tradition.
All the members gave an exellent and intellectual opinion on this .on behalf of people from current generation a member claimed that they have just negelected some of the traditional methods which makes zero sense which i agree completely. Overall this discussion was informative
Starting of with the crux of it, a Group Discussion is a commodious forum to confer on a particular topic of interest, scrutinize it from various perspectives and finally reach to some sort of a common conclusion. The best part of a GD is that ideas keep pouring in from different directions and analysis of the issue becomes much simpler, sharp as well as efficient.
ReplyDeleteComing to the illustration shared , the first impression would be the fact that there is an incessant flow of ideas from the participants throughout the discussion. This is in fact the most important point as a GD without ceaseless content wouldn’t be continuous and would have redundant breaks all over. But the glitch was that they started deviating quite far from their topic which originally was “Culture Sacrifice in the name of Modernisation “.This was especially evident when they were discussing about the increase in the choice of cars, etc which I personally felt was highly irrelevant. On the other hand, the talks on the other sub topics were extremely well-constructed and to the point.
As far as group dynamics is concerned, all of them did respect the views of their fellow participants by allowing them to completely finish voicing out their views except probably in one or two situations due to the urge to make a point which is quite natural. But the one thing that I felt was amateurish was that all of them started to unknowingly target a person(probably her views were not acceptable) and treat her as a prey. This is not a good sign of a healthy discussion forum.
A commendable thing to note is that although some of them weren’t as active and involved as the others, all of them maintained their posture from the beginning till the end and no one looked left out. Also, throughout the course of 20 mins, they maintained eye contact with the person talking.Their body languages make it evident that most of them were confident and fervent towards the topic except a few who although were attentive , but faced a lack of ideas.
A highly subjective topic like this would require a lot of critical thinking and expository analysis which I felt very few people used(pink shirt and the blue shirt guy).Although some of them did take the upper hand, I don’t think it showed dominance purely for the fact that everyone did get equal space and all that matters at the end of the day is how effectively you grab your spot.
Coming to my personal views on the topic, modernisation is an extremely important
process which is interestingly irreversible. Its positive effects are more far fledged than its short comings and I’ve never felt that this process has intervened in our cultural systems. This is because my definition of culture has nothing to do with the way I dress.Just because I wear a dhoti or a veshti, I don’t personify myself as an angelic Indian with high standards of morale and culture.I don’t believe in anticipatory bails. Culture for me is simply the human values I believe in and the ethics I trust, as simple as that. And I would confidently say that modernisation hasn’t been successful in bringing about even a tiny little shake into my beliefs.
Overall, although it did have small snags here and there(poor unstable conclusion for instance) , I would consider it as being impressive.

ReplyDeleteTo begin with, the group discussion was a fruitful one.The participants were completely focussed on the dichotomy "culture vs modernization". I believe MODERNITY IS
A VISION OF CONQUEST of DEVELOPMENT AND CULTURE IN INDIA.
Despite its image as a culturally diverse land, contemporary India is in fact a nation-state in conflict with its own people. It is engaged in a process of development that, far from enriching the lives of its myriad indigenous cultures, threatens them with disruption, domination and destruction.
But as far as this discussion is concerned there was no clear cut definition for the term modernity or modernisation. I strongly condemn the point that if a person wears dhoti in public he would be mocked by his friends.infact now a days due to popular Velcro dhoti ads youths are attracted and consider it to be superior. But I accept that modernisation suppresses the development of indegenous industries.
The example given was so true. Many of the Indian company's or brands had lost their market because of the international products.
Rebecca went out of the topic. The term culture has a very dynamic meaning .it keeps changing as modernity updates itself. She actually should have not been this outspoken as it was totally irrelevant. Wearing Saree in a modern way doesn't really make our culture vanish.
This point of argument is illogical.in 1930s dressing culture meant saree's worn in such a way that not even their hands are visible.in 1980s it meant wearing saree's with atleast sleeve and a proper draping.now in 2019 wearing a Saree is itself a culture.
I say "culture itself is defined by modernity(development)".
In addition to the way of arguement, I must appreciate ms.soundaryas choice of words and her body language.the participants had a good vocabulary and presentation skills.
Lakshman, Rebecca ,santhosh and soundarya gave their best whereas some didn't even speak which was a blackmark for this session. The discussion could have been better if they had put more relevant points.
The conclusion they arrived at was we can't stop development ,but have to incorporate culture in it which is an acceptable one.
On the whole the discussion was organized well and it was so interesting.
Hello everyone!
ReplyDeleteThe topic given for the GD is "Are we sacrificing our culture in the name of modernisation?". The girl who spoke first gave a brief definition on modernisation, which actually was a great start. Her choice of words is really appreciable. She was very clear in what she wanted to convey.
Content-wise, everyone did a great job. Many good points were stated in the discussion. For example, the guy in the blue shirt said that modernisation leads to a better world where there will be no illiteracy, caste discrimination etc. This point is really appreciable.
One of the girls in the discussion, Sharon Rebecca, made a comparison between the women in ancient India and modern India based on what they wear. She also said that a woman is a property that a man owns. This is truly shocking that she made such a point in a group discussion. This was controversial and totally irrelevant to the topic being discussed.
Throughout the discussion, both the pros and cons of modernisation were discussed. Because of modernisation, tractors were introduced. But because of the same modernisation, many farmers leave farming and move towards cities for employment. So modernisation improves agriculture in one way and also brings it down in another way.
Several such good points were made in the discussion but in due course of time,a deviation from the topic is observed. The participants hardly discussed in what way we sacrifice our culture in the name of modernisation. This was a drawback.
Participation-wise, everybody were active in the discussion except for one or two. They spoke clearly and loudly so that everyone else could understand and respond easily. Everyone listened to each other and took turns. The group discussion looks formal and well-organised.
Overall, the discussion was good. But it could have been better if there was no deviation and a proper conclusion to the topic being discussed.
Thank you.

ReplyDeleteThe topic given to the group was: ”Are we sacrificing our culture in the name of modernization?”. The discussion started off strong with the girl in orange defining the term ‘modernization’. While for the most part, the group did discuss the topic, I felt like it became more of a discussion on whether or not modernization is good or bad, rather than a discussion on whether modernization is actually replacing our culture. The points put forward by the members were well thought out and came from various perspectives. Most of the members brought up points supporting modernization as well as opposing it, which resulted in a well-rounded discussion. Various examples of the effects of modernization on industrialization, backward cultural practices etc were brought up, and thus the points made were all clear and well delivered.
No member in the group seemed to dominate the conversation, but unfortunately, one member did not speak at all. Other than him, the rest of the members actively participated in the discussion, often asking one another questions and responding to each other’s opinions, which maintained a smooth flow of conversation.
The discussion wasn’t very well organized- it often felt like the members were circling around the same few points and weren’t progressing forward. They didn’t come to a definite conclusion and simply concluded with the words: “We need to learn how to mesh culture with modernization”. While their concluding point is something that is very true, it was also something that was barely touched upon in the actual discussion.
The discussion had a formal tone for the most part, except for a few instances when voices were raised. The language of all the members was faultless and terms such as ‘I agree’, ‘I strongly believe’, ‘I object’ etc were frequently used throughout the duration of the discussion.
Some noteworthy moments of the individual group members:
At the start of the discussion when the group went slightly off topic, the member in violet quickly pointed this out and brought the discussion back to the topic at hand.
When the group member at the rightmost corner disagreed with another member, he politely used the term ‘I object’ before he continued on with his point, instead of raising his voice.
The member in pink, Santhosh, brought up many good points. I especially liked his point about how culture is something that has kept changing throughout the years and has never remained constant, and also about how modernization opens one up to a variety of options.
The member in dark blue and black, Lakshan, also spoke extremely well and he brought up points from various perspectives, some supporting modernization and some opposing it.
At one point, when the girl in green brought up women (which was off topic and irrelevant), the remaining members could have maintained decorum instead of randomly shouting out their opinions. But the discussion was brought under control with the help of the member in the beige colour pants.
Overall, the discussion was an extremely interesting one and it was nice to see people talk out their differences and share various opinions.

ReplyDeleteGroup discussion exercises are used to assess general behaviour traits such as listening skills, social skills and problem solving skills. It helps in Learning more .It increases your understanding of a subject or a lesson. It helps in generating more ideas about a topic. It lets you know about your mistakes and weaknesses and helps you build confidence in yourself.
In the above video each individual expressed their views and opinions about the topic given to them. They analyzed it in different perspectives.
They considered many sub topics realted to the main topic.
Body language is the language which resemble our inner feelings like nervousness ,confidence etc.So body language is the one which matters a lot in GD.
They involved all the participants and almost all of them raised their opinions without waiting for their turns. They also justified their views with some examples which should be appreciated.
Even though the topic switched in middle they were able to come out of it . Almost all of them were against a girl's view that women are not secure due to modernaisation which sounds odd,but instead being quiet she was trying to explain it. she is not worried about being criticized.
Finally their conclusion involved all the highlights of their discussion
"ARE WE SACRIFICING OUR CULTURE IN NAME OF MODERNISATION"
ReplyDeleteA group discussion is an open discussion on a particular topic discussed by a group of people. But, it doesn't appear to be a group discussion. Because in a group discussion every one needs to take part actively or at least try to analyze the topic by bringing forward some ideas. Only five people constantly discussed the topic, while others being idle. Three to four of them dominated the discussion not giving chances to others to talk. They just grabbed the mike from them without allowing them to complete.
I like the body language of them. It was perfect. They maintained eye contact while speaking. The language and tone were so amazing. Most of them spoke very well. They were relevant to the topic. Sometimes they went out of the topic. As someone said due to the intervention of foreign companies, some Indian companies completely went down. I cannot understand how our culture is affected here. We always prefer the best quality products. So it doesn't depend on the country, producing it. We know India produces high-quality tea. People from other countries buy tea from India. So we cannot say, they are not obeying their culture as they buy tea from India.
One of them said, before 30 years, his grandfather wears dhoti. But due to modernization, he cannot follow his tradition.
But, before 1000 years, his grandfather's ancestors used to wear leaves as a dress. If we taught tradition to be followed, then now also we would wear leaves as dresses. we can't blindly follow our culture. Due to modernization only, we abolished sati, child marriage, etc. We need to sacrifice these stupid practices saying it as a culture.
I like the way they concluded, that we cannot stop modernization rather we must learn ourselves to blend culture with modernization. It is agreeable. Overall it was a good discussion with lots of information and facts.
Thank you

ReplyDeleteThe topic for the Group Discussion was Culture vs Modernisation and How Modernisation affects Culture.
According to me , the discussion was good. Though they missed out one some points, they managed to highlight the important ones. The speakers brought in ideas from different fields which made the discussion interesting. At one point I felt that they had deviated from the topic and began to talk about the negatives of Technology. They had mentioned how various "bad practices" were abolished to a large extent and that seemed a good point to me. The speakers had contradicted each other which kept the discussion lively. Some of them spoke very little but yet made their point clear and valid. The body language of the speakers were proper except for one speaker.
Though, there was one speaker, who I felt was quite feministic in her words. At times, she had brought out things which were completely irrelevant to the topic and that brought in some "dull" to the conversation. There was also a speaker, who spoke both for and against Modernisation, which I feel is the quality that a good speaker should have, the ability to accept each others' point of view.
I felt the conclusion was short , but it was good.Topics like these are never-ending, and group managed to give a satisfactory conclusion. They were able to cover a variety of topics , from Abolishment of sick practices to Agricultural Improvements. The speakers were quite fluent in thier language which is a definite add-on to the Group Discussion. They were completely able to understand what the other speaker was trying to convey and that, what I think is the most important in a Group Discussion.
Group Discussion is not only about discussing a topic in the given time but also it is a great chance given to us to express our ideas and opinions.By group discussion we are able to learn new things and acquire knowledge on the topic in others point of view.We are able to see and understand the perspective of others.
ReplyDeleteIn the above Group discussion the students clearly pointed out their opinions in a clear and abstract way, so that others could also understand at ease.We must also does not interfere when the other one is speaking, everyone must be given a chance to express their opinion.
In a group discussion we must not get deviated from the given topic,we must not speak bad about the idea the others say,we can only say whether the point said by others is correct or not.
We must also follow a good sitting posture. In the video the girl was sitting in a dead center posture, this shows that the girl is confident on herself. She is not worried about what others will think of her.Even though this shows others that she is confident, sitting in this manner will be a great disrespect shown to others by us.We must sit in a manner that is both comfortable to us and also respectful to others.
We must not get offended by the points others say, they are just expressing their view.We should not be afraid of telling our ideas due to the fear of being criticized.
Time management is the next important thing that matters, it is good that we are having a healthy group discussion but we must also finish our discussion and come to a conclusion in the given time.We should not be get reminded by others that you have only limited time.we should make it short and sweet. So everybody in a group discussion must follow proper time management.

ReplyDelete"Are we neglecting our CULTURAL VALUES in the name of MODERNISATION?" was the topic that was given for the group discussion.
If you ask me, it was a very good discussion. But my opinion is that the dicussion was more about the pros and cons of modernisation than about the importance of our cultural values. The points about the abolition of Sati, the caste system and the evolution of our cultural values due to modernisation were good while on the other hand there were so many irrelevant points as well. I felt that the group was very keen on emphasizing the pros and cons of modernization rather than explaining its effect on culture.
The group members finally arrived at the conclusion that the society can't deny modernisation and accept it as it comes, but in the mean time they need to preserve their cultural values as well. They added that we need to learn to incorporate our cultural values into our modern lifestyle.
The overall conversation between the group members was natural. Everybody took turns and presented their points very well. There was active participation from most of the members of the group. The conversation was natural and formal. The body language of the members was very good as well. Perfect eye-contact was maintained by the speakers.
This was a very healthy group discussion with the active participation from most of the members. The group discussion started with the members explaining what modernisation is and moved into the effect of modernisation on society. There was a samll discussion about our cultural values being neglected due to modernisation. Then the discussion turned into speaking about the merits of modernisation. I would suggest that the discussion could have been more focussed on the topic with more relevant points.
Thank You!

CULTURE Vs MODERNIZATION
ReplyDeleteThe initiation of the group discussion was really good. The definition of modernization was explained in detail.Modernization is something that shouldn't intervene our cultural values but should adapt for our betterment. One person says that modernization has changed us a lot and I agree to it.As another person said sati and child marriages are no more due to modernization, which is a really good point.
One person kept on talking about women and she also said some unnecessary stuff .She said that the dressing sense has changed but I don't think that has anything to do with culture. What you wear totally depends on one's comfort.
The conclusion was good but I was really surprised that no one brought about the environmental change that modernization has brought and how lazy people have become ( including me ).Though the group discussion was good I feel that several more factors could have been included.
Thank You

ARE WE SACRIFICING CULTURE IN THE NAME OF MODERNIZATION.
ReplyDeleteAs soon as the topic given to them,They first defined what is modernization by giving an example of wearing dhoti's in the past and present. They didn't mention about what is culture (they mentioned during the end). How modernization affects the culture and helps in removing bad practices we done in the name culture (sati's).In the discussion we get to see many perspectives like industrialization, religion, agriculture, fashion etc. and also giving examples for each sub-topic they cover and provide a statistical data whenever it's possible. During discussion, they deviated from topic and started discussing about pros and cons of modernization for some time. Like one person mentioned that local car companies are closed only
because international companies like Fiat ,BMW etc. because of modernization.
In the discussion Sharon Rebecca tried to mention that Indian culture also provides a security for women, but another person interfering and says that it is like a ownership of property. The modernization makes us forget the cultural practices we follow everyday like praying , getting the blessings of elders etc,but also bring us lack of discipline to some extent , forgot about the history and
Past. Instead of discussion of topic they discussed democracy, technology, employment availability and more
Group dynamics are maintained well in this discussion everybody listens what others are speaking , natural conversation happened like one person immediately interrupted in a polite manner and at the same time everybody allowed to make their point.
But some people laughed during the middle of the discussion I don't know why??. Everybody spoke very clearly in a
bold tone without grammatical errors in a simple way. Body language is okay because some people laughed abruptly during discussion and some are seemed to be not interested and some gestures might be used in discussion and they should also encourage others to make their statements also.
Critical thinking is lacking here because everyone tries to express their views on the topic in various aspects rather than analyzing the topic , questioning the points in discussion ,which only leads to give more clarity on the topic.Exchange of ideas and views are being done effectively.During discussion ,when they get to know they still have only five minutes ,they should start summing up the points and prepare for conclusion rather than they discussed till the end.
Though there are various aspects to be discussed in culture like clothing, practices, food, livelihood, traditions, history, facts etc they focused more on modernization and it's benefits. Modernization creates new culture by hiding the existing culture.
The conclusion that they came to is merging the culture and modernization in a balanced way .The conclusion is nice but the person who, says the conclusion immediately without discussing with others and it seems like pre planned too. There are some beautiful points also, that one person had a American friend when he comes to meet him,he will say namasthe and follow our traditions. This is a clear example of how to maintain culture and modernization in a balanced way by respecting each one's traditions and bringing equality among peoples.
Overall ,The group discussion is very good and the topic given has the potential to be discussed in various aspects but it is limited here .Some deviations might be avoided.

ReplyDeleteA group discussion has to cover the positives and negatives of the topic given. This was achieved in the above group discussion. The members of the group were quick enough to differentiate between modernization and culture.
The way the members didn’t agree to every point put forward is also really necessary in a discussion because it provides an opportunity for the members of the group to assert their ideas and keep the discussion moving forward. In a discussion, mannerism has to be maintained and this was perfectly done in the above group discussion. The way the members of the group put forward their opinions and supported it by giving examples, helps in making the points clear and more relevant. It is also essential that every person takes part in the discussion.
Well, yes at times it seemed as if the discussion had gone off topic, but this is natural when dealing with people with different ideas, however they were quick enough to come back on topic. Over all, I feel that the discussion was highly fruitful and I learnt how such a simple topic can have such diverse perspectives.

ReplyDeleteThe topic given is "Are we sacrificing our culture in name of modernisation?"
ReplyDeleteOn the whole, the discussion didn't covered many aspects of the topic which seemed disppointing. The initiating part of the discussion with one of the speaker defining modernisation as "something which doesn't intervene with culture" was good. The discussion would have been more interesting if all the participants had took part actively. Also some weren't able to express their ideas clearly as they were keen on their language.
In terms of content, the discussion covered many aspects which should be appreciated. At times they were also discussing out of the topic whhich was waste of time. Some points were really good like modernisation has promoted democracy and right to equality while some facts weren't right like British themselves abolished sati(but truly it was due to consistent effort made by Indian leaders like Raja Ram Mohanroy)
The body lanuguage of all the participants was good except few.Their posture and gesture showed that they were neither interested in the discussion nor listening to others.
The particiants were quite fluent which is a core to a GD.A speaker was speaking on feminism throughout the discussion which seemed irrelevant. Also she was monopolising her thoughts on culture.
Their conclusion of "world keeps changing ...So we should adapt and also stick to the cuture" was good. But they could have arrived at a still better conclusion if the discussion had been still dynamic. We should stick to our culture at the same time we should also get exposed to different other cultures as it leads to experential learning.

ReplyDeleteSACRIFICING CULTURE IN THE NAME OF MODERNISATION
First of all I like the topic that they discussed. It is a topic based group discussion(controversial). The girl who spoke first in the group discussion is good.Becuause her choice of words and the way she talk is resonable and poilte. Her bodylanguage is good.she defined the topic well.wearing dhoties in today's life is not possible means it is not mean that we are scarificing our culture. The guy who wore pink shirt opposed this point in good manner that is he said that because of modernization sati is prohibited. He made a point that culture changes from time to time not becuase of modernisation. The girl sheeran opposed his point by saying "I am not agree with you" is good because in group discussion while interrupting it is supposed to say that. Her tone and body language is good. She nicely related the change of dressing sense in women because of modernization. But it is their freedom to wear the dresses they liked.so this point is not relevant. The guy who spoke the effect in relgion because of modernization in not so interesting. The downfall of Indian products due to foreign products because of modernization is not acceptable because as per people mind "THE BEST IS THE FIRST" and standard matters a lot.Universal brotherhood and improvement in agriculture because of modernization is acceptable. At last they concluded that "culture should not be sacrificed for modernisation".
In group discussion all should participate but one guy is physically present but mentally absent. All guys spoke well except some. The body language of all who spoke is good. The fluency of pink shirt guy is good.Besides all the things, everyone listened well. They didn't finish the GD in time. The way of thinking and way of relating other topic of all is good. The way of interruption of all is polite. This GD is informative.
In my point of you,for a developing country modernisation is much important than culture.
THANK YOU.
The topic for the group discussion was
ReplyDelete'Are we sacrificing our culture in the name of modernisation?'.It is a very interesting and never ending topic to
discuss.
The girl who opened the conversation stated that modernisation is something that doesn't intervene with our culture, and it is misinterpreted in many cases. She also put forth points opposing the other girl who was present there. But her body language was not that fine. The posture in which she was sitting is not good for a group discussion. The participants gave many points supporting modernisation. They stated that, many ugly practices like sati and child marriage were abolished as a result of modernisation. They said that modernisation has aided agriculture. The invention of tractors and other modern stuffs have helped to increase the efficiency of agriculture. They also stated that with modernisation, people are unemployed in agriculture and many are moving to IT companies. One guy stated that modernisation and industrialisation go hand in hand.So modernisation is essential for the development of the nation.
One of the girls present at the discussion, was talking about women. But her points were not right. She was describing women as men's property which is not true.
Though the discussion was good,I feel that they haven't understood the essence of the topic properly. They talked about modernisation in general, the adavantages and disadvantages of modernisation, but didn't put forth many points stating how modernisation has affected our culture or how it hasn't affect our culture. If more points were given in that area, then it would have been an excellent discussion.Apart from this, every thing was fine. The participants gave their points in a humble and polite manner. The discussion was very interesting.
Thank you.

ReplyDeleteRebecca! She went way off topic, the premise was culture Vs modernization and every time she got her chance to speak she only spoke about women and how they are not strong. She didn't get any of her facts correct, women are way stronger than what they have been a few decades ago. Rebecca did not have a solid definition for culture when the orange shirt guy interrupted. She had nothing to say at all. Which again only goes to prove that she had no idea about the topic at all.
Modernization and industrialization go hand in hand, that was a solid point. Which has both pros and cons. Also, developing an atom bomb or a nuclear bomb is not wrong, it's not the effect of the dark side of modernization. It should be dated in history, it's a moment of pride for a country or a group of individuals/organisation for having come up with an amazing invention like that. Modernization does help consumers to choose what's better or what's more apt to their lifestyle.
To conclude, nothing really wins. Modernization with a few ground rules of culture is what's necessary for a country's development.
Hello I'm Aparna.G(2018103515)
ReplyDeleteThe topic of the group discussion was "Are we sacrificing our Culture in the name of Modernization?".This topic is highly relevant to today's society.
The participants spoke in favour of modernization and made really good points. Ms.Soundarya stated that modernization is a set of rules you follow so that your country can be economically developed and it wouldn't intervene with the traditional rituals of your community. But I personally feel that her point cannot be implemented practically to get the desired result. For example if I wanted to apply for a corporate job I cannot go and attend an interview in my traditional attire. I have to change my outfits according to the scenario which contradicts her point.
They pointed out most of the pros of modernization. Because of modernization many superstitious beliefs were removed and many cruel acts were abolished.Women are being given equal rights today and that's an effect of modernization.Modernization has really improved technology and has has brought faster means of transportation and communication. It has also improved health of millions of people. The introduction of western medicine has significantly decreased the mortality rate and has eradicated many diseases like smallpox.
They also spoke about the patchwork families existing nowadays. One member opposed it saying that you are supposed to live with same spouse throughout your entire life and not breaking the marriage. And another person opposed it and feel that what this guy spoke was right. If there is no more happiness and joy left in that marriage there is nothing wrong in filing for a divorce. If not it would be punishing yourself and you become the reason for your unhappiness.
Coming to Ms.Sharon's views I strongly disagree with her. If a person wants to hide their marital status it's up to them to make the call! It's very ironical that being a woman she says that a woman is a property of a man.It is the right of no person to criticize an adult about their dressing style. She wanted women to be secured by men.Being modern means adapting a few things that makes the world a better place to live . I f a woman is dependant on a man she would obviously be suppressed by him and that's not what modernization is.
I personally like this quote one of them said"Modernization and Industrialization go hand in hand". The person who quoted this is very practical. As they said modernization gave birth to many new technologies and industries and thus increased the employment opportunities significantly.Earlier it was just agriculture and basic trade. But today there are various fields where you can try your hand at and pick the best one for you.As a consumer there are many options available compared to 2 or 3 decades. This is just an example of Darwin's Theory of Survival of the fittest.
Though they all spoke about the pros of modernization there was not much importance given to the demerits of it.There are a lot of unwanted rumors that spread like forest fires through social media.Because of the introduction of western medicine ayurvedic and herbal treatments are going down.Due industrialization farming lands are being destroyed.
And there's this thing(I feel)they missed (most probably because this GD was held in 2013) because of modernization the Section 377 and gave the people of the LGBTQ community equal rights. That's an effect of modernization.A person will no longer be blamed for someone whom he is.
On the whole I feel that they were a little on and off the topic and most of them agreed that modernization has improved the quality of living.I liked Mr.Lakshmanan's and Ms.Soundarya's opinions. They were only 4 or 5 members who actively took part in the GD and the others were silent and did not make valid points. On the whole the discussion was well civilized and was interesting.
This is from 2018103509,
ReplyDeleteThe topic is "Are we sacrificing our Culture in the name ofmodernisation?"
I think it is a controversial topic.Because we may sacrifice our culture or may not it depends upon their individual view.In the Gd they made their points by comparing past and present activities alone .Mostly they didn't talk about future .Only one guy said that we may eat pills instead of food in future . And also he was the only guy who made his pionts by saying examples (dhoti, horse cart ,car brands, prostitute like this) .They might have given separate mike to each of them .Because in the gd someone tried to get mike but the speaker didn't give the mike .So after that he didn't speak thus he might have forgotten his point.
We can notice that there was a one guy who didn't speak. Other person
should have asked him to share his points thus they should have encouraged him.And then they didn't give exact definition for culture. In the gd they said their points without saying that I agree or disagree or I would like to add to like this .Then only we can know that whether they are accepting or objecting to other's.
There was one person said that modernisation is developing agriculture.I disagree because we are using chemicals to grow plants. We are eating those plants so it may cause side effects. Then one girl said that about women's dressing style .I agree with her. Does modernisation means exotic ?
There was one guy said that modernisation removed child marriage. In the same modernisation society they declared the 497 rule.
In the gd every one listened to every body while they were speaking. And they made their points clearly .And so it was a very interesting gd.
Thank you
The group was all about " modernization and culture".
ReplyDeleteAccording to my opinion. Modernization is a term which indicates the adoption of changes in thoughts and values. Culture was something which our ancestors practiced. It also has its our good and worst cases. Our thoughts are said to be modern when we extract the good out of it. This is a physical world which is developing in a very fast manner and this modernization has supported as well as doomed many aspects.
I really loved the way how the group discussion progressed from defining what modernization is and how it is destructing our cultural values. Yet a few of them went out of the circle and gave opinion which was irrelevant about the topic. I completely disagree with one of the participants who quoted that prostitution was due to modernization and the reply given by another person was very clear that it existed even in the ancient times. I could not understand the points quoted by one of the participants who said that women were supposed to be secured by men and due to modernization, women have started to go out of culture. I believe that modernization does not have anything to do with dressing, it completely depends upon ones thought and values they derive from the society.
I agree with a point where one of the participants says how modernization has led to many options but it has also led to a lot of confusion and human resources exploitation.
One of the participants said that an American guy could nt call his step father as a dad, has if we where in that situation, we would have reacted even more worse. The society would have given her / him worst title. It is good that indian culture values relationship so much. But drawing a circle around a women or a men as forcing them to live with a life partner which was not even chosen by them is no way good. modernization has led indians to opt for a better life but it has not evolved our thoughts, turning to modernization for comfort alone is not appreciable and that is why india is still a developing country.
The discussion was continuously beating about the bush on how culture is deviating due to modernization. It could have also said more on how modernization and culture are developing along with each other. The conclusion of the discussion was very unobtrusive. It could have stressed more on how modernization is benefiting the society and how culture has left out the superstition and enhanced human thoughts.

Group discussion, as the name suggests, it is a discussion done by a group of people about a particular topic
ReplyDeletePeople have different opinions regarding most topics - conflicting opinions, neutral opinions and even the same opinions. However, most conversations in today's world does not allow one to express the ideas fully due to restrictions and fear. A group discussion is an activity that is conducted to overcome this barrier. And the given video is a really good example of how a group discussion works and what is expected from a group discussion.
The discussion started off with a proper introduction where a member defined what modernization is and the conversation picked up from there. The group discussion given did not involve participation from all members .some were more active than others
I disagree with some of the facts that were said, especially the one regarding the Independence of women. I feel like the group should have addressed that point with more depth.
Overall, it was a positive discussion as most issues were addressed. However there is still room for improvement .

Are we sacrificing culture in the name of modernisation?
ReplyDeleteEven though the topic was about the sacrifice we make in the name of modernisation unnecessary topics like technology and development was brought in. One of the speakers mentioned the stupidest point where she projected women as a property to men. The way she supported her point by projecting that women wearing short dress is unacceptable is wrong. Every human has their own right to wear whatever is comfortable and no other person should have a say in it. The topic was not actually well explored by the participants because there were too many deviations. Participants confused modernisation with technology and development. Modernisation is an ideology where as technology and development are a consequence of knowledge and time. There were a lot of confusions between sociology and technology in the middle. One of the speakers mentioned wrong facts that prostitution was brought in by Britishers. Also, the participants expect one had no clear idea about culture. Culture is not about a country it is more about a place. One person said that in America his friend introduced his dad has his mom’s husband. But the culture that we had in India supported men having more than 1 wife. Modernisation has its own advantages and disadvantages. It was useful at those times women were given equal rights as men. EQUALITY is a modern idea. And moreover, the most important point that has to be mentioned is that copying the ones whom we presume to be modern isn’t modernisation. Also, culture is useful in some places. When it comes to marriage it is the culture that forces the couple to be together even at adverse situation. Thus I will conclude my review by saying that modernisation is a blade with 2 arrows if the generation understands it in the right way the results could be heart-warming. But if it is interpreted in the wrong manner it becomes a deadly weapon
2018103611
After watching this contradictional group discussion on the topic “Are we sacrificing culture in the name of modernisation ?” ,I would like to say few points .
ReplyDeleteFirst of all everyone actively participated actively in group discussion and raised points very well except one or two. Sharon Rebecca gone around the feminism completely instead of covering other aspects.
They might have raise some more in order to make this discussion more interesting.Everyone cooperated others to speak and given chance to everyone who wants to speak. They covered both supportive and rejective statements for the topic.Their body language is really apreaciable.some people spoke in a simple way but in a effective manner with good content. Most of them given their openion on the topic but no one asked questions it’s one of the drawback in this group discussion.
As one guy mentioned if one wear dhoti in current generation every one will aught at him..ya ofcourse one should upgrade and update theirself but it should not go beyond the limit.Overall they should be appreciated for their participation in such a interesting and crucial group discussion.
One should update theirself but never should change their tradition.society with a good culture and with an glorious modernization helps the country to develop much better.

This group discussion is about "ARE WE SACRIFICING CULTURE IN THE NAME OF MODERNISATION".The group mostly covered most of the points. But still sometimes they went out of the topic too.One of the participants named Santhosh spoke really well. Most of his points were agreeable. The one on the left, although some of his points were controversial he gave many valid statistics which cannot be denied.
ReplyDeleteAnd Sharon had the view of women being treated as a property that men can own after marriage is ridiculous. And she even stated that women need men for their security which is not true. Also one of her points was, instead of moving towards modernisation,we are copying what foreign countries do which is really agreeable.
Some of them didnt express their views that much.It seemed to be a discussion among some 5 or 6 people.Regarding the body language, all of them were very conscious and gave their opinions in a polite manner without making it as a debate.
Eventhough sometimes they came out of the topic, they managed very well to come back again to the discussion. But I feel that the topic is about modernisation but most of their points were related to technology and development.Modernisation is something abstract and related to idealogies of people. This is one basic aspect they missed.but the way they carries their discussion was goodAnd a guy even concluded at the right time summarising all the points.
On the whole the discussion was very polite and mature and portrays a professional group discussion with all the body language and basic necessities of a group discussion satisfied which should be really appreciated.
On my point of view, modernisation is like a fire.It can either be used to create or destroy things .
THANK YOU.
Hi , this is Akash Kirthik(2018103006).
ReplyDeleteThe group discussion was about 'Are we sacrificing our Culture in the name of Modernization?'. Most of the members actively participated in the discussion which made it interesting. The contradicting views of the individuals made me curious. Modernization is nothing but bringing forth new innovations and throwing away negative aspects of culture. In other words, modernization is refurbishing the existing culture. I disagree with the part where one said women are properties of men . The comback by another was fantastic.
I don't see why nobody brought forward the negative effects of the post industrial age. The only negative effect modernization bought is environmental degradation and lack of social interaction.
-Thank you.
Discussions leads to an exchange of knowledge and ideas. It also makes a person to think and understand a subject more deeply. The very aim of a group discussion is to make the participants think critically and differently.
ReplyDeleteThe topic chosen for the Group Discussion was "Are we sacrificing our culture in the name of modernisation ".The topic was a thought provoking one and it is of much relevance to the present generation.I feel that the topic is a little controversial as one could speak both in favour of it and vice versa.
The initiation of the discussion was good. Coming to the content of the discussion, the speakers brought out many good points like the abolition of sati and child marriage due to modernisation and a lot more. But the discussion went out of the topic many times.People were more interested in registering their voice than in providing quality content. As far as the content is concerned , the group didn't discuss many important points. The discussion was more oriented towards the pros and cons of modernisation and hence it failed to address it's relation with culture.and people were delivering irrelavant points. One of the speakers seemed to be more feminist and her ideas were more targeted towards women.
As far as Group dynamics is concerned, the members of the group did a good job. They participated enthusiastically. They listened to other people's points very patiently and they didn't get into any argument, which is to be appreciated. But one thing that I feel is lagging is that they didn't encourage and involve the people in the group. i felt that the members spoke repeatedly. If everybody has spoken ,then the group discussion would have been more interesting.
Talking about the body language, I would like to appreciate the participants because they maintained a wonderful posture throughout the discussion. They also listened to others views patiently.
The conclusion is what leaves an impact in the audience. The group said that"world keeps changing ..So we should adapt to the changes".It was good but I feel that they could have done better.I feel that the conclusion was not up to the mark.It wasn't well delivered. They couldn't summarize the points.
In my personal view, I feel that modernisation at the cost culture is useless.Except some little flaws here and there, the discussion was awesome.

ReplyDeleteThe discussion is about "Are we sacrificing our culture in the name of modernization". Everyone in the GD had given a better perception of their own about this topic. But somebody told about our 'dressing mannerism'. I would say that this dressing mannerism is not exactly modernization. It was something about modernization. A guy pointed about sati, this is completely acceptable about modernization. Even our Prime Minister Modiji is very sure about these things and says that India exactly needs modernization, not westernization. In my point of view, we are not sacrificing our culture due to modernization. Perhaps by westernization we are losing it.
Modernization is something which was completely about getting improved from all our barbaric techniques to scientific inventions and technologies. A great example in Japanese, they are actually developed country in every norms, but this modernization does not affect influence, their cultural ethics values. But westernization is something which is incorporation of the norms, values and culture of west into our culture. This is what exactly happening, in our country. Today's scenario is changing, as westerners are looking towards our culture like yoga, ayurveda, etc. But we are forgetting these terms. But we can't accept that dressing manners is ruining our culture. Because it is all about rights that a woman or man have. They can wear whatever they wanted to. We cannot take this inappropriate topic to 'Modernization vs. Culture'.
Modernization in defence and science is on the right pathway. Modernization is very imporatant to become a developed country, but we should also keep our own traditions in our minds. Because it is the only thing which remains what we are. Our constitution, is on the right path, which is considering all about our culture. So, we as a citizen should follow our culture and sholud develop through modernization. Somebody in this GD spoke irrelevant topics, if they were on the right way, we wolud get many perceptions. But they had given us many good things in their point of view.

Are we sacrificing our culture in the name of modernisation?
ReplyDeleteAs all of us had different opinion about culture and modernisation ,definitely there will be some controversy between the points that we would have like to made .Obviously each one of the
those points, they have said which will increases the strengh of either culture or modernisation but not both.Only because of modernisarion,Some blind activities like sati and other social
contamination activities are prohibited now a days .Modernisation doesn't mean that we haven't respect our culture. It really means that we have adopted or acquired some changes,in-order to survive or maintain some unique qualities in this world.Due to Modernisation, several artificial machines have been made. For example:In agriculture field those machines satisfy the needs of the land-owners instead of field-workers.In this case, the workers who depend only on the field-work will get affected and move towards cities to get employment. Hence these type of causes, plays a negative role for modernisation and also those causes have made the world more competitive, especially in the job opportunities. The another point thay have made is,"if we are not modernised yet, then we will definitely use bullocks and horse for travel and also for other activities".This point speaks the positive side of modernisation. All of them provided a very good speech. Finally I conclude that, eventhough there are some negative points about modernisation,I would like to tell that,we doesn't sacrifice our culture in the name of modernisation.

First of all, I m very grateful for selecting such an inevitable topic which we are dealing with day-to-day life.
ReplyDeleteIn my point of view,Modernization, basically means to remold a cultural system into a new mode.
I myself would like to understand modernization on technological and economic dimension, i.e., the development of scientific technology, and stable economic systems which structurally make the development possible.
Traditional culture, if understood in a broad sense, indicates all human activities such as religion, philosophy, moral standards, laws, politics, economic, society, history, literature and art, such as have been preserved, learned and transmitted in a given community or group over a long period of time.I shall confine my attention mainly to the religious traditions of India.
Even if modernization is necessary to improve human life, it will be indispensable for Every nations to maintain their traditional cultures too. Traditional cultures need neither to reject modernization nor to be absorbed in the streams of modernization. These two must harmonize and complement each other. Now is the time for each nation to seek its own individual and unique way of modernization.
The modernization brings a change in the behavior of people vital therefore may impact on identity. Indeed when we change our way of living due to modernization we do change our way of doing things for efficiency without abandoning some of the cultural values we think are important and are our identities.
My conclusion will be like:
Traditional things we respect in most cases are not the means of doing things but the cultural values we cherish and those values may not be affected because of modernization.
Yass! This is my point of view of this topic. Obviously, they explored thier ideas and exchanged information. This group discussion helps to improve my ability to think critically. I noticed that they listened with an open mind to new ideas and points of view.

In a group discussion, everyone has to take their part and make sure that all members have approximately the same time to speak. But here two of them seemed to be silent. One of the participants points often confined that modernization leads an adverse path to women and their livelihood. While sticking to the main topic, involving the topic of Prostitution is quite sensitive and it is not an ordinary one to easily connected with modernization and cultural aspects. Ensuring only one member of the group speaks at a time
Deleteis a good thing maintained. Most of the time, they asked both open-ended question and a complicated one too. They had a good tone. They sound friendly and inquisitive rather than authoritarian.
I would be happier if made it clear that everyone's opinion matters.
There were many name-callings and personal attacks. They can argue with someone's idea or opinion, but cannot argue with that person on a personal level. I felt most of the time they were drifted off from the topic. They ensured good body language and maintained relaxed eye contact.
The topic given was " ARE WE SACRIFICING OUR CULTURE IN THE NAME OF MODERNISATION"
ReplyDeleteThe topic had a good start and it went in the right direction initially. Modernisation itself means a transformation from a traditional, rural society to a urban, industrial society. So I personally felt that the topic was one-sided.
The main aim of a group discussion is to bring out their views and ideas. I felt the all the participants were accretive. They didn't agree all the points, they had put forth proper arguments. At one point of time I felt the discussion had turned into a debate.
In a group discussion the participants have to politely disagree arguments and also appreciate valid points, which they never did. For the first few minutes it felt like a conversation to me rather than a discussion.
The speakers talked about car companies and the intervention of foreign goods in Indian market which had no relation with the topic. So at times they went out of the topic , but there were also consistent efforts to put forth their points. I felt that few of the participants were not seated in a correct posture they leaned back which showed their lack of confidence. Though the discussion was dominated by a few speakers, it was a good one.
The had concluded it well. At the overall the group discussion could have been even more interesting.

The topic of the group discussion is "Are we losing culture in the name of Modernisation". Before I give my crtique about the group discussion, first let me say what is a group discussion. It is a platform where a number of people(limited 6-12) comes together and put their point of views on the given topic.
ReplyDeleteIn the video posted here, ten students were involved in a group discussion. The discussion started strong with a brief description about the topic given by Sowndarya(orange dress). They spoke about the effects of modernisation on culture for some time after which they never brought out the modernisation's influence on culture for some time. Rebecca was speaking about women for the most part and was guiding the group away from the topic. The timely intervention of the man in blue shirt (second from left) brought the group back into the topic. The man in pink shirt brought out a very interesting throught provoking point which i consider is the best point put forward in the entire discussion. He said that culture changes with time.
Now analysing the group discussion, some participants were inactive(2). Some spoke only when they objected others' opinion. Soundarya, Lekshmanan, Pink shirt , the three blue shirt spoke really well. They gave apt points and also objected others' opinion nicely. Rebecca actively participated in the discussion but she was off topic. While voicing out their opinions, they used hand gestures. All the participants were actively listening to the other persons' view on the topic.
In my point of view, they should have spoken more on the given topic. For neaarly half the time, they were either off the track or was discussing only about modernisation and not about its impact on culture. It was like only 5-6 members were in the discussion. No one dominated over the other, instead the others were silent for the most part or almost the full time. Active participation could have made it a very superb session. The participants acknowledged coparticipants when they give a valid point.
On the whole, It was not the best and it was certainly not the worst group discussion. It was just above average in my point of view.
Thanking you,
Sriman.A

Impact of Modernization On Culture:
ReplyDeleteThe topic discussed in the video is "Are we losing culture in the name of modernization?"
Generally (according to my understanding anyway) group discussion refers to an open discussion on a thought provoking topic. A bunch of people discuss the given topic and analyse the topic critically. And that's what has been done in this video.
The discussion started with Soundharya Muthukrishnan explaining the topic clearly. Then everyone started exchanging their opinions about the topic. Slowly several sub-topics evolved such as the one in pink shirt(I don't know his name) about banishment of sati,Lakshmanan about dawn of prostitution,Rebecca about women and their need of protection(Although she didn't intend to speak in a way that would hurt other women). Then everyone discussed these topics and shared their own experience and knowledge about these topics among themselves.
In my opinion although everyone took part in the discussion and shared their thoughts on the topic Soundharya, Lakshman, the one in the pink shirt, Rebecca spoke more often than others. Rebecca did go out of topic sometimes. The remaining members could have joined in the discussion more. I thought many of the aspects of the topic was not discussed such as countries prospered due to the modernization, some defects prevailing in culture, etc. But I loved the points such as modernization weeding out the undesirable parts of culture and the remaining culture being the same and how in America the people treated with respect once they knew that you are an Indian. The members did use body language as much as they used english langueage to communicate with others.
In my point of view they could have spoken more about the given topic rather than going off-track. Finally the conclusion was given nicely and no-one argued after the conclusion and every one maintained their manners even though the conclusion may have been against their points. Also during the conversation there did seem to be a disagreement over the opinions but they maintained their cool which is more important than anything during the group discussion. I conclude my critique with this.
-2018103527
Group discussion is an open discussion which helps us to improve our speaking skills, body language,it makes everyone to express their views about the topic. It is a friendly conversation.we can learn many unknown things from the group discussions.
ReplyDeleteThe video is a topic based discussion, the topic is about "Are we sacrificing culture in the name of modernisation?".Everyone expressed their opinions about modernisation. Their voice is clear, easy understanding, and discussed in a pleasant manner .They discussed many facts relevant to modernisation.
They dicussed both positive and negative impacts of the topic, like because of modernisation child marriages, sathi sahagamanam were abolished, we improved a lot in agricultural sector but at the same time most of people were moving towards IT companies.
They have covered many things in a short span of time which is also important in a group discussion. Finally they concluded that we can't stop modernization but we can train ourselves to blend our culture.

ReplyDeleteAccording to me, group discussion is a miniature of a society. Society is a place where people with different mindscape come to a common platform to carry on their life in a harmonious manner. Similarly, group discussion is a concept where people of different mindscape dive deep into the given title and resulting in a meticulous research in it. The quality of a GD is directly proportional to the number of participants. As everyone participating in a particular GD have a specific mindset, the way of analysing the title is definitely different.
Actually the participants are considered as the representative of different people in a society. So we will have a diverse opinion, ideas which paves the way for the indelible understanding of the given issue.
GD is completely different from arguments because a particular topic is discussed in the former whereas the topics are argued without any satisfactory points in latter. Dignity is usually maintained in their GD which helps us in the understanding of the title. Their GD has several positive aspects in it like speaking or expressing ourselves boldly, gaining knowledge to be strong in our stand, listening to the speaker, focusing and indulging ourselves into an issue, respecting others and maintaining our dignity.
They develope eye to eye interaction which makes them a respectable person. It helps us to learn patience and thus it gives various solutions to a particular problem. This widens the path of solving the problem .In GD Some persons were quite inactive and I felt that they didn't share their perspectives. I really liked the body language everyone had. It was formal and expressive.
Thus by going through the above GD it is clearly evident that GD are highly effective in understanding a situation, the way of approaching it and finally the way of improving it. So I conclude that by treating modernisation as a tool for a particular extent and by using it effectively rather than extensively will have a constructive impact on the culture and society.
ARE WE SACRIFICING OUR CULTURE IN THE NAME OF MODERNISATION:
ReplyDeleteAs a whole , the discussion is satisfactory. The topic, though it is an usual topic , it is evergreen argumentative. This GD really distinguished between Group discussion and a debate. The participants are expressing their views independently instead of sticking as for or against except a few. Coming to individual performance, though the 1st participant stick to supporting modernisation , she gave many acceptable and relevant points for her argument. The GD was started with good introduction to modernisation but someonr might have given a clear introduction for culture. Even after one of the participant was asking for definition of culture , a perfect fact is not given. The definition for modernisation is adopting for development as said by the 1st participant . But culture should have defined as some moral values
for life taught by our ancestors and that had been followed for generations as tradition. Those constrains were constructed 100s of years ago .If we find an adaptable solution for the present day , implementing it is intelligence but without losing those moral values.
The discussion went out of topic many times. I think the participants were running out of points but managed with some irrelevant topics in the name of subtopics. They were not able to distinguish between globalisation , technology (atom bomb is completely out of topic ) and modernisation. Such aspects spoils the GD. The were given the topic lose of culture in the name of modernisation but is was not spoken more except a man saying that why don't country consider a person following culture is modern. It would be more acceptable is modernisation and culture have a handshaking property.
Some participants are not careful about their speech eventhough
they were to give their own views. Prostitution in the name of Devadasi and all completely another sensitive and deep topic. It was good that a person took initiative to stop such unwanted , sensitive discussion. And the woman who was opposing modernisation was adament .She should have mind that it is public discussion and could have avoided opposable views such women are men's properties and all. But the other participants answered her wisely and with perfect words. It is really appreciatable part of discussion. And they might have added well and some good points in conclusion and it would be better if all participants say something to conclude their GD points of views. And two participants were completely inactive till the end.
My overall review for the Group discussion is that it is a very usual topic. They could have performed more towards the solution. But they did not discuss how culture is depleted by modernisation which is the main topic.
Thanks.

The topic on which the GD revolves is quite argumentative. "Are we losing our culture in the name of modernisation?" this topic requires critical acclamation. Initially the discussion started by citing examples of how ancient India progressed over culture and modernisation . Almost each of them expressed their views in a proper manner. Though a question arises if those views were logical are not, still people were able to express in a pretty decent language and most importantly with a better body language. All of them were taking and giving chances except few of them. The discussion didn't turn into a chaos and it wasn't quiet like a library as well.
ReplyDeleteOn analysing the speakers' views on the given topic, two of them were very clear while a lady was very much focussed on women empowerment. Her views would have been more relevant to that topic. There were some deviations from the topic, but that's happens in almost every discussion. Some notable deviations were the talks about prostitution. What link does prostitution have with modernisation impacting on our culture? Yes, we have to agree that modernisation brought by the british has innumerable impacts in our culture both in positive and negative ways. As said by the girl in the panel, expecting a betterment without ourselves adopting a change, isn't proportional. Our country has reached significant heights in the recent decades because of technological development. But that technology needn't impact our character which is the real threat to our culture. As long our personal character is conserved so is our culture. It's not defined specifically by the clothes we wear or way we carry our lifestyle. This idea was brought by a person. He expressed it so well in a crystal clear manner that he would adopt to the changes for the current lifestyle and retain his personal culture as well. Also, one of them pointed out that employment opportunities would be under threat if lives are more automated. It's obvious. Once we reach a stage where robots do all of our works with artificial intelligence fed into it, what value does human have at that point? Though this is a valid point, the person who brought in this idea didn't correlate this to the topic properly. The point can be linked to the topic in several ways. Again there was a talk about agriculture. All the statistical stuff can be considered right. But still agriculture is more specifically an occupation rather than a practice. Of course, there's not a proper life without a healthy food, still all the other budding industries have to be given equal importance.
Everyone was willing to put forward their points. Thereby indicating their enthusiasm towards the discussion. Maybe the topic was of their interest. Unless we have an inclination towards the topic, I don’t think that we could do well. A person or two were clever enough to take initiatives as and when required. It was evident that the participants paid utmost attention, when a co-participant was addressing. If not, they couldn’t have argued or rather discussed that well. But I did feel that they could have motivated those who had a tinge of inhibition initially. The body language of the participants looked commanding and confident, this acts as a major advantage when one's performance is evaluated.
Several conclusions can be arrived at the end of the discussion. It was argumentative still many other points could have been arrived and many topics which they discussed could have been properly concluded exclusive of them being tabooed ones or not.
Overall the discussion was good with some flaws. If the conclusion had been better then it would have been more appealing.

ReplyDeleteGroup discussion refers to a communicative situation that allows its participants to share their views and opinions with other participants. It is a systematic exchange of information, views and opinions about a topic, problem, issue or situation among the members of a group who share some common objectives. In this video, the topic discussed was"Are we sacrificing culture in the name of modernisation?".The discussion was quite interesting and knowledgeable. The persons participated in the discussion did not loss their patience even when exactly opposite outcomes or views given by others.
They were not arguing and lend their
Ears when others speak. One person says "if he wears a dhoti,he will be mocked".This was his stereotype.Rebecca's points were sometimes didn't make any sense and her viewpoints are always in antifeminism.
I won't accept all their views about clothing. In early age,the primitive man
were worn animal skin and leaves. Then ,why
our grandfather and father wore dhotis.Modernity differs from time to time.
The thing which is considered to be modern today, may not be modern the next day.
Some of the good points made while discussion was about Abolition of sati and caste system.
The arrangement of the group discussion was good. All of them interested in arriving conclusion and noone looks disinterested. They made their views through simple English. The body language and confidence of the participants should be appreciated. The communication was effective. The negative of this discussion was
sometimes they deviated from the topic.
The conclusion of the topic was" we must accept the change when it arrives".

ReplyDeleteThe topic given for the group discussion is "Are we sacrificing our culture in the name of modernization ?". This topic is a controversial topic. This group discussion was so interesting than any other GD videos on YouTube I've ever seen.
First of all it had very good start by stating the definition of modernization. As she said, it is state of progress of a country . She also added that she supports for modernization if it doesn't intervene in the culture. Because of modernization every country has grown up to this level. For example, India is making everything online to make every work much easier. In my opinion modernization is needed for a country to develop. The one who started discussing thirdly (Santhosh),supported modernization and gave many valid points as possible. It is also true that we can't deny that modernization has improved the nation, I don't think we are sacrificing our culture in the name of it. Ofcourse, I accept that it has made a change in our dressing sense but culture is not only about dressing. Sharon Rebecca told that those days women were fully covered as she belong to someone and they were secured and protected. I disagree with her, as Santhosh said a woman is not property of a man. Also nowadays, women are more secured and protected and even more educated and has more freedom than ever before.
Coming back to the dressing issue...30 years back my grandfather might found himself comfortable in dhothi, I find myself comfortable in pants. The same thing happens to women. Those days women were not allowed outside their home. But now they have the freedom to go it and work and earn by themselves. So no one can go and ask them about not wearing saree. Take an example of athletes, both men and women have to wear shorts in order to perform competition. I can't walk up to them and say you're not following our culture. Best example is P.V. Sindhu. She wore sleeveless and a skirt while playing tennis. But after she won the match she came in her traditional dress for the ceremony. So we can't say that we are not following our culture just seeing our dressing. It will change according to our comfort. We still follow our culture in many other ways as possible, like celebrating our festivals, following our own eating habits, doing our rituals.
Another participant (Lekshmanan) said that being with the same spouse forever, can also be a way of portraying our culture. I think that don't make any sense. It's like forcing ourselves to pursue a particular course, while you like another course. But, if living with same spouse forever means culture, then in order to follow it we should have the maturity in choosing the right partner. Yes,foreigners respect Indians, but not for this...It is because the values we follow and the respect WE give to others.
When the participant in the extreme left gave the plot that we are technologically developed due to modernization, after a while the participant next to him asked,"What about atomic bomb ?". Here one is saying the advantage and the other one is saying the negative impact of it. I would like to answer it, as he said, always there will be people having some other thoughts using the same idea. Simple example- a knife can be used to cut vegetables or to hurt someone.
->continuation....
DeleteThe same guy who asked the question, started a sub topic. In that it was asked, whether it is good or bad in focusing more on working in an IT company. As Sharon Rebecca told that 70% of India's occupation is agriculture, it is bad that we focusing more on working in IT company. Because nowadays, how many youngsters would be happy to work in an agricultural land?. Also Agriculture is not an easy job, farmers have to go certain hardships. Some participants said that we have tractors some other development due to modernization. They also had a disagreement by stating that many people will lose their jobs if everything is mechanized. I think if modernization has the power to develop the whole nation, it should also have power to develop technologies that could be understood even by an illiterate. So we could just make their jobs more easier. But in my opinion, modernization is not completely spread among agriculture. If it had spread, many farmers would've been alive now... and it's is a sad truth that we all depend on the agricultural sector (for food) which we don't care about. Santhosh stated that the graph of those companies would reach an optimal point and would decrease eventually and at that time graph of agricultural sector would increase which was quite valid.
Before the end, they defined culture as right to equality. Just as the beginning the conclusion was quite good. As the participant said we can't stop it's progress, we have to alter it to maintain a harmony in the country. So the answer for the title is that, we are not 'sacrificing' we are 'changing' it according to our needs, since still don't forget our tradition and culture.
In this Group discussion, only 6 members were active, others just gave a few points. That too, the participant on the middle didn't speak up until the conclusion. He was about to speak up at the end, but sadly no one noticed him. That was one flaw I found. But the agreements, disagreements, conflicts, examples, personal experiences, sub topic etc. made the discussion more interesting and had a variety of perspectives . Overall it was a good group discussion.

A Group discussion refers to an open discussion where group of people exchange their thoughts and ideas.Group members analyse the topic and bring their thoughts on the matter. It focuses to make decisions, solve a problem and implement new extensive ideas. It improves our ability to think critically. It increases our confidence, improves listening skills, etc.
ReplyDeleteIn this GD, there are 10 members participating on the topic "Culture Vs Modernisation".On the whole, four to five members were active in the complete session. Each one was given a chance to express their opinions.None of the opinions were supressed. They maintained a healthy conversation without any problems. They maintained a good body language and a good posture. No one was criticised or targeted.
Firstly,a clear explanation was given on Modernisation.Opposition was raised on each one's opinion but still it was a healthy conversation.Modernisation was clearly explained and distinguished from Westernisation. They explained the changes of Indian culture due to religious beliefs like Sati. They clearly substantiated their opinions with apt examples. There were some deviations from the topic and they still managed to get back to their point. One of the participants was asking many questions regarding each one's opinion.Modernisation was mostly spoken about transportation and not on one's freedom.Indian culture was also spoken on problems of women .It would be proper if more points would have been included on culture. Each point was expressed in a convincing way.None of them was biased against anyone. Finally, few points were dotted out clearly.Conlcusion was made convincing for everyone.Overall,it was good.

CULTURE Vs MODERNIZATION
ReplyDeleteGroup discussion is nothing but exchange of ideas by participants on a given topic. The main concept of GD is to bring together a set of people on a common platform to share their views and thoughts and also enhance their learning by absorbing the thoughts of other people.
Since GD brings together a wide range of ideas and thoughts, it is much easier to solve a problem based on the conclusion of all the ideas. We get many different solutions for a single problem and at the conclusion of GD we can get the best solution and solve the problem efficiently. GD is not only for sharing of ideas, it also increases listening skill, ability to express views, speaking skill, etc.
The topic discussed here is 'Modernization and Cultural values'. The teammates took their chances and expressed their views about the topic including both the pros and the cons very efficiently. Some of them showed more involvement which was very nice. The ones who supported modernization claimed the fact very well that only because of modernization several superstitious beliefs were abolished. And the ones who opposed modernization claimed that it destroys the culture of the people as a slow poison and we must not adapt such type of culture. If someone slightly goes out of the topic, some other person indicates it to him and brings him back to the topic very well. Everyone expressed and opposed other's views in a polite manner and there was no offense. It was quite awesome and a perfect GD as well.
A few teammates had no eye contact and didn't express it to the full. A few only very actively involved, and a few doesn't involve and keep on just listening with no comments. Apart from all these things, it seemed to be a very good GD and very interesting to watch.

ReplyDeleteThe topic of the GD was :
"ARE WE SACRIFICING OUR CULTURE IN NAME OF MODERNISATION"
The start of the discussion was very well done, giving a short definition of the term modernisation. Yes, I also feel that, modernisation can be related to some development that's happening to us or to the society, changing ourselves according to current trends without intervening our culture. If we come to know, what we are following as a culture, is pulling us down or is wrong then there's no use in entertaining it. We must rather choose a better practice. That's what modernisation does. Eradication of Child marriages, sati practices etc are some examples. In these cases we are not sacrificing our culture but just making it right.
Coming back to GD, most of them we're clear in expressing their point to the group. Every fact stated was justified with an example. But I think one question was left unanswered, weather the looks of a person or his cultural way of dressing have a hand in saying if he is modern or not. Everyone's body language was good and the tone of speaking was polite. They were not harsh while disagreeing with someone's idea and they had patience to hear other thoughts . Some barely took part in the conversation .
I think what Rebecca wants to convey was that modernisation has lead to Westernisation . We all have started thinking modern, where we have made to accept some western culture and started criticising our own. But she wrongly conveyed her point and her ideas looked Anti-feministic. But I think that was not the real idea what she wanted to convey. She must be more careful while Addressing a group.
Though the group deviated from the topic at some points of the discussion, GD on the whole was good and entertaining. The conclusion was very much acceptable but it seemed as if they suddenly jumped onto conclusion . It would have been more pleasing if some unrelated points were avoided.
Thank you!!
ReplyDelete" Is modernization a cause for the suppression of culture"
The topic given is a quite argumentative one.
My point of view regarding the topic is modernization is inevitable.i.e development is unstoppable.there's a significant difference between modernization and westernization.
Modernization, basically means to remold a cultural system into a new mode.Westernization would mean that a certain indigenous cultural element of the traditional East is replaced by the penetrating Western element, and the functional role of the former is taken over by the latter in case of a country.there always exists a dichotomy between modernization and culture.
So one should never affect the other.
Now,
As far as the discussion is concerned,it was a very interesting and rather an informative one.
Starting of with ms.soundarya she had an excellent vocabulary and a decently good body language which gave her more plus points in evaluation point of view.
A guy (I guess its santosh) put out a point that he would be trolled by his mates if he happens to wear dhoti in public. I disagree this point as now a days I see the younger generation are again moving towards dhotis gettin attracted towards it. The small scale indigenous industries are diminishing is a valid point .
The fact to be noted is due to modernisation the farming practice is getting reduced which is so true. Participants giving personal examples made the talk a more interesting one.coming to the outspoken rebecca she had a very good vocabulary but a bad choice of words. Talking this explicitly in a group discussion is not advisable. And also her points were baseless. She was a typical feminist.
At the end the team concluded the session by the conclusion that we must learn to incorporate culture in modernity and move further..
On the whole the group discussion was organized and supported well.

Group discussion is one where a certain set of people combine to share their thoughts, ideas and perspectives on a chosen topic. When I say 'sharing thoughts', it not only involves the art of speaking but also includes the art of listening, analyzing and acquiring knowledge.
Although I don't support the views of everyone who spoke in the GD, I respect each one of their views.A life without modernization would still be in the stone age. Modernization provides efficient solutions to the existing problems. Modernization has its fair share of advantages and disadvantages. The major difference between modernization and westernization is not well understood by most of the people.
I was actually annoyed by Rebecca's points which were condescending and quite frankly irrelevant. The fact that she considers woman as a property of her spouse is misogynistic and truly shocking to know that she believes this, as a woman herself.
We should never forget about our roots and core moral values (kind to people and animals, being loyal to loved one and so on) , at the same time, be open-minded enough to modify or change certain ideas. The discussion could have been more topic-centric. Everyone articulated their thoughts well and it was interesting.
The group discussion was about "Are we sacrificing our Culture in the name of Modernization?".Obviously, our culture is totally decaying nowadays. Nobody follows and respect their own culture. Today all like only Western culture, Western foods and western dresses. This not meant I am against western culture. It's our responsibility to protect our culture and bring it to the next generation. Our culture is a precious thing. It's not a matter if you are protecting our culture or not, but don't spoil it.Yes, we do have the freedom to choose and adapt to what is suitable for us, but don't you think we deserve to know the reason or in other words, the science behind every tradition and culture, as we term it?Each place or state or district in our nation has its own beautiful tradition. Least do we realise the science and benefits of it? Every tradition and culture is designed on the bases of the land, climate/season, crops grown etc. But for the people to strongly believe it. They created stories so we connect to these traditions religiously. As the youth of current times, we are not told the reasons why or the science behind every ritual or tradition, therefore, we question on why to follow them and refuse to follow them too!.I strongly believe we need to be understood about our land and cultures in more depth so we wholeheartedly choose to follow it than being imposed to follow it.

The group discussion was about "Are we sacrificing our Culture in the name of Modernization?.I don't feel that our culture is decaying. Yes, it is changing but for good. People now have their own choice, they are able to do things which we were not able to do before. The doping of Indian culture with western our European culture in a good manner is not at all bad. Now, we are free and still Indian. The culture is not decaying us it is just bringing a few changes that our leading us to the top. We are now on the top posts of the world only because we are able to interact that we didn't use to do earlier. This change which is present in all of us is just because of the few changes that came because of western culture. Women are on top because we changed the thinking that women are just good as housewives only.
ReplyDeleteI'm not insulting our culture but just acknowledging that the changes that came in our culture are good and are not decaying but making it more beautiful. That is why India is the fastest growing country in the world. In our earlier age if guests arrive in the house they wish them and treats them in a very proper manner but nowadays we can see that if the guest or their own parent arrives home they keep on playing in mobile or tab etc. This really shows that our culture is decaying.
Thank you.

The group discussion was about "Are we sacrificing our Culture in the name of Modernization?.I don't think culture decays, it actually improvises and I think our culture is in no way better than others except for the zero. Oh! come on guys many people in this world gave science their contributions but that doesn't judge their culture. Here culture actually refers to traditions and customs followed by us. In America, the divorce rate is 40% and in India, it is 1% but, it doesn't mean that married people in India are happy, they (mostly women) adjust for their children and also they are afraid of society. We have dowry system, even now in many rural places child marriages are happening. Coming to our ancient India, we forget that there is even Sati. Even after independence 40 cases were discovered on Sati, god knows how many were not known to the jurisdiction. Arranged marriages where mama and papa see the girl and approve her as if she is a broomstick checked if its incorrect condition before using it. Then the boy marries her mostly without even knowing her likes and dislikes, opinions. So, finally I just want to repeat what Dalai Lama said. Open your arms free, get ready to change with the world but do not Let go your values. Most of us believe that today our culture is decaying but who set the culture, we the human beings right?
