I am kapilesh .
ReplyDeleteA similar incident has happened in the life of my cousin sister . She was passionate to serve the army and also got a job in air force . However , her parents had the opinion that women cannot do defence related hard work and so didn't allow her to join the job . Though she was passionate to serve the nation and also had the qualities to join in it , because of the bias , she wasn't allowed to take it .
Also I have an incident in my own life . I had a friend who was very fair and fluent in english . My tuition teacher , initially thought he was a bright student based on his external appearance . He treated him with more interest . However , my teacher later realised he was wrong when he came to know that he wasn't doing well in academics .
I wish to have a world which doesn't have these kinds of bias and judgements .
World without bias! I really hope we get it in real!
DeleteBoth the video's are about stereotypical nature of people.parents should teach their children not to judge people based on their sex or colour. An indident happened to my father 22 years ago.He was at driving test and when he was about to drive the authorities questioned weather he could drive cause he was asian. It took my father 3 driving tests to finally get a licence
ReplyDeleteThree tests! One test itself was traumatic for me! where was this? i mean which country? btw who is this?
DeleteI'm dhanush...
ReplyDeleteThese two vedios are evidences that stereotyping starts from a very young age. We, as adults, are still stereotypes.
I myself had a thought that tamil medium students can speak proper English. When I came to anna university, I saw many tamil medium students speaking excellent English. Some were even better than me.
As kapilesh has mentioned, I too had a cousin who was made to take teaching as a profession, only because she was a girl.
It would be better to avoid these kinds of "assumptions"..
In line 5, its "...cannot speak proper English..."
DeleteEven i never knew i had personal bias! we are product of our environment and unconsciously imbibe a lot from our family, friends and society. Education is supposed to make us question those beliefs. At times we might go against popular opinion and that takes more guts!
DeleteThis is from 2018103012.
ReplyDeletePrimarily, in accordance with me, it's a genetic problem. My grandfather,a hard worker who is 50% steorotypic made his daughters work as his job urged him. My dad (25%) joined her daughter in a decent girl's government school after 10th,but not to me. Then realised, joined her in a private engineering college after 12th against those who convinced him to join her arts. Next is me. I don't know how I will react to this in future.
Secondarily, if a job is assigned to me by dad, I will argue why it can't be done by my sister. i think she could. I might tease her for this which hit her ego very badly. Here the steorotypism lies. There must be an equality!
Secondarily, I had no problem with racism. The thing is i treat everyone equally and appearances are deceptive.
ultimately, i cannot assure whether my voice against it might change the world as kapilesh mentioned early. let's hope for the best and watch what does the world give us in future.
THANK YOU.
So are you also biased? or do you consider your sister equal though u just tease her?
DeleteMam, I consider her equal.
DeleteWell judging by these two videos I believe that making the society into a bias-free society is going to be a rather demanding task. I also believe that in order to achieve such a goal we will have to work from the ground up. But from personal experience its rather disappointing to know that our educational institutions be it our schools or college, which teach us not to be biased and not to discriminate based on gender inculcates the very same attitude into our minds.
ReplyDeleteIn my school and rather several schools the pupil leader must be a boy and the girls always only get to be the assistant pupil leader. Not only that even in each individual class most of the teachers want the boys to be the class monitor or the class leader whereas the girls only get to be the class assistant leader.
So personally I thought this trend is going to stick up until school, once I get into college it will not be so but unfortunately even in our college the President posts of various clubs is given to the boys and only the Vice President post is given to the girls.
Like I said in order to cause a change, we will have to work from the ground up, beginning with our education system.
!<--Shankar Kumar S-->!
I didnt know that such discrimination existed in our college. But it is even worse outside the institution. And if you are in areas outside a metropolitan city, its even worse. thats a sad state of affairs.
DeleteI believe that these stereotypes should be broken down. Back in 1980's, my mother was strictly not allowed to go to a job, instead she was insisted to do tons of household work. She also worked day and night just for getting Rs.80 to pay her typewriter class. But besides all those work, she finally got a job as a typist in Judicial court at the age of 22. Not only for girls, stereotypes are also considered for boys. The most common is that "boys should not cry". But, aren't we free to do what we want,as an individual?
ReplyDeleteStereotypes are passed from generation to generation. That's why some of us still believe it. Generally kids learn more from what we do than from what we teach. So it is parents' responsibility to raise their children without gender stereotypes.
In the second video, which was about effects of racism on children, the girl stated that she was offended by calling 'black' by others. First of all, we all are humans. But it is sad to hear that we are judged by our own colour. This also should be taught by the parents just to make the next generation be discrimination-free. While watching the video I thought of making a change,
Instead of the dolls, what would've happened if we had kept a pic of Barack Obama and Donald Trump ?
Thank You.
-Subheksha Kumar S
having a pic of Obama and Trump? that would have been interesting! Women doing housework is even more strenuous than working outside. People who work get off on weekends, but housewives dont get day offs. and they dont get appreciated also. that is the sad part.
DeleteHi I am Swadesh B
ReplyDeleteEvery person is a stereotype in one or the other way. This is because that is how our brain works, it takes up previous experiences and makes decision based on those experiences so that the future isn’t faulty. The example I am going to give is my sister’s life. She is an IAS aspirant. But the reason why most of our family members don’t want her to do IAS is because it might affect her marriage. Here we live in a society where marriage especially for women is like property selling and ownership transfer, where the woman has to leave the house and become dependent and serve the husband as if she is a property that is being transferred to the next family. Till now there are jobs which are “not-for-woman” jobs as it might affect or delay their marriage. The videos above shows us how stereotypes still exist and are among blooming buds too. Unfortunately, that’s how we work. We take up previous experiences and map it to the future. The possible solution for these problems might be thinking before we do an act and changing the way we look at the world.
But somewhere we should start the change! I really wish your sister had got the chance to do IAS. But these days men are not so insecure. i have seen many dads supporting their daughters in their ambitions. Discouraging her becos of pitfalls in the profession would have been another reason but not becos of marriage. that is bad! but as u said it is the reality.
DeleteHi Iam KEERTHANA.S. The facts stated about stereotypes in the above two videos are cent percent true.Stereotypes can be abolished only if we, the society think out of the box and come out of it.One of my personal experience is...personally I like both coding and space research. But when given a choice to select one of the two,I would definitely prefer space research. And fortunately,I even got seat for that at a reputed college. But my parents who allowed me to choose any course of my choice, stopped me from choosing course based on space reasearch field alone....stating"AERONAUTICS AND SPACE RESEARCH WONT BE COMFORTABLE FOR GIRLS.THEY ARE MOSTLY MEANT FOR BOYS".My father who gives me entire freedom for whatever I do was not ready for this. Now again here comes the bias.We the next generation must take a stand to eliminate these stereotypes so that the quote "NOTHING IS IMPOSSIBLE" will actually be true!
ReplyDelete-Thank you.
In chandrayaan 2 project, dont we have women scientists. so its not impossible right?
DeleteThis is from roll no:2018103557
ReplyDeleteAbout the first video:
In the first video most of the children have a picture of firefighter, pilot and a surgeon as men. Only few children drawn the picture of women. It has been believed that these kinds of jobs are for men and women cannot do these jobs. It's true that women are physically weaker than men. But they have strong mental strength than men. With which they can achieve every thing.
A kind of same incident happened to a sister in a village near my home town. She became an IAS officer at the age of 30+.not all but some of the people in that village degraded her by saying who will marry her at this age? Women should get married within the age of 25.men should do all these things not women. Instead of appreciating her they degraded her. This kind of mentality should be changed.
About the second video:
"DON'T JUDGE A BOOK BY ITS COVER"
In the second video when the children's are asked who is bad? They immediately showed the doll which is in black color. Because every one have a belief that black means bad. This kind of racial discriminations should be vanished. Because this kind of beliefs in young minds can affect their future life.
Parents should teach their children about this because teaching young ones with good knowledge and thoughts will help them to come out of these beliefs.
-Thank you
Even after becoming IAS officer, was the girl illtreated? shocking! i hope one day she becomes the decision maker for her village and they had to respect her. Racial beliefs are also formed by the society. revolutionary changed needed.

ReplyDeleteHi!
This is Ajith R.
I analyse that there lies a great discrimination between men and women,by watching the two videos.Normally, people think that women are weak ,inefficient and worthless, whereas men are robust, powerful and efficient.Badly, this bitter reality is being reflected in all walks of life today. I think it must be completely eradicated. This is what I suggest.
If we turn over our own history ,which is 10k times ancient, we picturise the portraits of great and honorable women like Kalpana Chawla , Sunitha Williams, Jansi Rani, Indhira Gandhi etc., which were notable. Their achievements were mind-blowing, remarkable and irreplacable. Keeping in this mind, the young and soft hands today must get instigated and achieve a lot and get a rank higher than men. But i recommend that men are too efficient .
they must be well treated with equity.
thankyou.
'But i recommend that men are too efficient'?? what are you trying to say?
DeleteBoth gender bias and racism have been in existence for very long years. These type of stereotypes have come this long way because most of don't ask the question "Why should we follow? "During our young age we would think our parents might be right and blindly follow their advice. But later as grown ups we realize all these stereotypes are totally useless. In my personal experience, I've seen my relatives insisting my sister and cousins to learn cooking as soon as they come of age so that it might be helpful after their marriage. Also they didn't allow my cousins to pursue their higher studies out of their hometown. Most parents consider "marriage " as their ultimate duty when a girl is born.
ReplyDeleteAs it is always parents, whose action and advice has a primary impact on children, they should stop following these stereotypes and racism so that their children will have no knowledge of these stereotypes.
-Anand S
parents too are victims of the same society. it takes strong ppl to get out of such norms and think on their own. Children of such parents are more individualistic than others
DeleteA friend of mine used to play cricket with a group of people in Bangalore, some of them were from my school and the others were the local kids of that area. They weren't bad players. But the local kids there referred to him as "vella panni" which translates to white pig. Let's talk about racism in india, civil war in the states from 1861 to 1865. Laws have changed eventually, there's definitely bias in certain regions. But in prevails in major parts of india. A man shouldn't get married to a woman of a dark complexion. Actors who aren't fair don't get major roles in films. We still crack racist jokes. Now this friend of mine continued to play cricket there because he was really passionate about the game. But in most cases people wouldn't be comfortable to continue playing having so many hecklers around. Be it a white man or a dark man, we need to look at how good of a person he is and how good he is at what he's doing. That is all that should matter.
ReplyDeleteWe've been brought up in a certain way, "my son is going to become an engineer and my daughter is gonna study medicine". When our parents told us tales about great cops, it was always about policeMEN. Adjectives like brave, courageous, strong and vigor were only used for men. It has been fed into our heads that certain professions are meant for men. My mom would disown me if i told her that i want to do home science. My grandfather would make baseless rules like women don't have a say in decision making. We need to become progressive. Kiran Bedi was the first female IPS officer is an amazing fact because she's a woman. Most of us don't know who first indian male IPS officer was, because it's just too easy for men to do things, beacuse the society is less accepting of women.
Hopefully things will get better in a few years. We've seen changes, women are allowed to drive in KSA, oscars are being awarded to black actors too. But what about India? We don't want a higher official from the neighbouring state.
Vishal Bharadwaj
truly said! in india we do have so many discriminations based on color of skin, caste, community and what not! Even speaking English can also become a case for discrimination. If one group can heckle a person for not speaking English, we also have another group making fun of a classmate who tries to speak in English. No wonder we are in the same developing stage for past few years.
DeleteFrom 2018103039 :
ReplyDeleteStereotype is neither good nor bad because women can not do all the difficult tasks(eg:military) as men.Similarly men can not do all household chores as women. But one should not judge others goal or profession based on gender. In Delhi CM introduced a scheme in favor of women (i.e: women need not pay bus fare). But every women are not poor and this scheme is not applicable to senior citizens(men). Here we can observe the stereotype. In my point of view “there should be equity than equality”.
“Every diamond has its source from coal”.
We should not judge a person by his/her appearance.Everyone is unique by his/her talent. It doesn’t matter whether he is black or white, it only matters what he achieves in life.Dont’t judge the book by its cover.
Thank you.
What do you mean by equity? how is it different from equality?

ReplyDeleteStereotypes and bias are common in today's world. While I have never been personally biased against, I have seen and heard stories of this happening to people I know.
ReplyDeleteMy mom told me that when she was studying in school, her relatives and teachers said that she would never successfully get an engineering degree, and that it was useless for her to continue. They backed up these statements with "Girls are supposed to stay at home. It is futile for them to study." But she continued to ignore all of them and worked hard while continuing her studies. She eventually proved all of them wrong by getting into a top college and later getting a job in a well known software company.
While stories like this continue to take place in the world around us, I believe that the number of cases are going down. These days, more women are studying and getting jobs. A few years ago, a man of colour(Barack Obama) became the president of the United States. This was unimaginable just a few decades ago. The problem has not been solved, but it seems to be improving.

ReplyDeleteThe two videos here, clearly show how kids in age groups of 5-7 perceive the world largely impacted by stereotypes. It shows that prejudice is so hardwired in the human brain.
We have come across several instances where there is denial of a fair chance because of prejudice that is so deep rooted in our minds.
There have been times when teachers haven't given me tasks that are very taxing, such as going to the amenities centre and fetching print-outs, but have passed on the task to the male-representative. When I ask them why they don't want me to do the job, they say, it's because it's going to be hard for me to walk all the way in the sun, stand in the excessively long queue and wait in that congested room until I get my copies .
While it makes me really glad that the teachers care so much for me and that I have lesser work on my shoulder, I also notice a clear bias. The bias here is largely favourable to me. But what about the guy?
And it's the same bias that excalates to denying me, or any girl, her fair chance to do something, starting from something menial as running errands to getting a job that is viewed as more suitable for the men, like being a firefighter or fighterplane pilot as shown in the video.
The whole idea of fragility is a very large bias that we all believe in.
In minuscule scales, it looks as if the girl is being favoured.
But in the larger picture, she is being denied of something she is capable of doing simply because she is likely to be more affected.
As a child I had ambitions that changed on a daily basis. It started from being a domestic cleaner to a taxi driver, to a robotist, to a genetic engineer, to a writer, to a representative in the Security council,to a detective, to an archeologist. The list goes on and on. And I finally settled for becoming an engineer. When I would go up to my mother everyday with my newly found dream career, she would brush most of them off as a passing cloud and some of them really worried her. But there was always one thing that she reiterated. She would say, "Aparna, you're a girl. You're gonna run a family someday. You need to take up something that will support and sustain your lifestyle. Work is only a part and not all that matters to you. Only a 9-5 job is apt for you. You can't become an archeologist, you don't need to break your head doing research on genetics. Stick to something light and peaceful".
As a kid, it seemed like something that my mom said in annoyance, but as I grew older, I could see the bias that was so deeply screwed in her head that she began to believe that a prejudice is an appropriate way of life.
While we are all talking about being progressive, becoming open-minded and opening up to all possibilities, we analyse situations, but in most situations the analysis is prejudiced. And it's not deliberate.
We all have our defined confines and we accept whatever that fits in. There is growth in terms of the fact that we accept more changes nowadays, but it's still largely defined by these confines.
Prejudice seems to be hard to get rid off. Yet not impossible. Educating ourselves, being less ignorant about what's happening around us, and being able to think rationally will help us get there.
-Aparna
2018103009
Well written! i agree after a time, even prejudice becomes part of life as time goes by. Your mom is part of the society which strongly believes definite roles for men and women. And she sees what is good for her daughter using those filters. As you say education helps. Not just theoretical education but the courage to be the one to lead the change is needed. When you read a news where a girl, daughter of an illiterate labourer has scored high in civil services, then we should laud the father who had the courage to help his daughter realize her dream.

ReplyDeleteThere is a incident happened in my friend's life.
One day myself and his school friends visited his home for some occasion
We spent a wonderful time together.
After his school friends left ,my friend's father advised him to keep a distance / cut their friendship of his school friends because he thought
They are bad boys. why means they look lean, having wierd hairstyle, wierd clothing, the way they speak is different so he came to that conclusion.
Later my friend explained that they are very nice people, helping me when I'm in need , supporting me , making me very happy in the school .
After that incident I never judged anybody by the looks, attitude etc
All these kind of problems are happening only because judging people very early
After watching the two videos In my opinion both stereotypes and implicit bias are similar , only the situation we use the words is different
In first video all children thought that it could men ,but children didn't knew that there are women in that professions. this is due to lack of exposure and stereotypes
In second video ,most of the children choose black ones for no reason
That's we're thinking capacity lacks
We have analyze anything before we have to believe
Nowadays the stereotypes are being broken which is helping in the advancement of the society
In some schools if a student is failed in one test , everybody thinks that he will not study properly,he is dumb ,and his classmates will avoid him .which leads him to losing his confidence ,fear of talking to a new person, makes him uncomfortable in the class, limited circle of friends etc
This just another example
Hi! This is Akash (2018103006) .
ReplyDeleteLet's think of the first video in another way. How many children would have drawn a male teacher ? As a receptionist ? The same child who drew a male fighter pilot would have drawn a female for flight crew. These sterotypes don't mean that a woman cannot do a job that a man can. As elders, it's our duty to teach the children not to sterotype someone based on gender.
I remember my aunt who wanted to join Indian Air Force after graduation. Though her parents allowed her to pursue her dream , our relatives were passing comments like, " Look ! This girl wants to become a pilot! ". Ultimately she joined the military as a radio officer. I feel it's not our place to pass negative comments that may demotivate others.
We are brought up by feeding up information which are subtly racist. Just think about all the 'Fair and lovely and Fair and handsome' advertisements. All those commercials portray a dark-skinned male or female who is shadowed by a fair skinned model. These implications gets programmed into our subconscious mind , which later clouds our judgements based on biasing by skin colour. I think that its not entirely an individual's fault. The society is the one that's broken. We are responsible not to create a world where someone is judged by their skin color.
S Vedanth-
ReplyDeleteIn the first video, children are asked to sketch professions that we by convention consider to be "physically demanding",hence we subconsciously assume that only men are fit to take up such professions. But this present generation are luckily growing up in a period where the concept "anyone can be anything" is becoming popular. But the previous generation grew up in a time period where they were conditioned to think in such a manner and live their lives according to conventions set up by the society.Even in cinema,it is very rare to find women centric movies, they are literally being used as props and their only role in the movie would be to you know...and since cinema is a tool which influences masses, such potrayals of women must be diminished if not stopped.
White is supposed to signify pure while black is supposed to signify dirt,impure,evil..No one is born racist,we are made to think in such a manner. But people who sympathize need to realise that the last thing they want is for you to show pity towards them.A teacher, during our first class gave us a problem to solve. She approaches my friend and assumes that he does not know anything and teaches him as to how to solve it.Never once did she bother to ask if he already knew the answer and since it is our teacher he did not want to do her wrong so he played along.Even though she did not mean any offence, she ended up hurting him in a different manner which questioned his intellect based on his colour.
"Fairness cream" advertisements are also one of the major causes that worsens discrimination. That too big, influential personalities/celebrities who act in such advertisements knowing that they inspire a lot of people, they promote it anyways for money. They make us want to become whiter by indirectly saying that only white people can be pretty, beautiful etc.
Even if our parents teach us to not discriminate on the basis of religion, race, gender, caste etc it all comes down to the environment within which we are living.Hope that atleast the next generation has progressive thinkers.
In this video the stereotypes shown are only a small fraction of the stereotypes that exist. Some people are denied or discouraged from opportunities that they would have otherwise be entitled to. Once my aunt was selected for a very important scholarship program. But out of the people selected she was the only woman. No one expected her to get the scholarship for medical college, but she still tried hard for it and came out successful. The director in charge who was a woman helped her out and supported her when no one else did. This shows that as long as you try you can achieve your goal.
ReplyDeleteAs for a racial bias i have never personally seen it occur but as the world gets more and more progressive people become more accepting of other races and ethnicities. In situations where a person of a certain race would not be eligible ,they can now freely contest on an equal platform as everyone else.
this is 2018103581.
ReplyDeleteIn the first video, children were asked to draw pictures of firefighters,surgeons,etc..they subconsciously assumed that they were men.We were not raised in an environment which encourages women to be an achiever in all the fields. They assume that only certain jobs are suitable for women.
in the second video, they performed a doll test which tests the mentality of children towards a person's colour. we have been told that we have to be certain way to be acceptable in the society. So,we don't like the way we look and we idolize those features that society looks up to.
It depends on how we react to these situations. We shouldn't let these stereotypes destroy our life.
This comment has been removed by the author.
ReplyDeleteThere are so many such stereotypes believed and followed in the world. These two videos depicts the gender bias and racism. Most of the stereotypes we blindly follow are utter waste . We should think before accept and follow one thing. We should not blindly follow and do one thing just because our former generation did it.
ReplyDeletewhen we talk about gender bias , the scenario is completely changing. Nowadays there is no restriction for women to do any work. There are achieving in so many fields as men do proving that women are no more less than men. But still in many rural areas there is absolute gender bias that girls should be married to someone and boys should take care of their parents. Girls will be sent to higher studies out of their native place though she cant get better education there, while boys will be given better education in a better place and whatever he wants to study is allowed. This is not right. No matter whether its a boy or girl required education should be given and its upto them to choose which field they should go.Its all the personal experience that I have come through in my native place as I too from a rural area.
Racism is another blind thing. Most of us thing that white colour is beautiful and black colour is ugly. Its not in the colour and everything is in the inner beauty.
Hoping for a better world in the future with NO SENSELESS STEREOTYPES!!!

ReplyDelete-- By watching these two videos I come to know that even kids are strongly affected by the society. In this society people strongly believe that men want to do hardware works and women can able to do only household activities..from past years, these type of unusual beliefs are continuing like genes.Even kids are getting hypnotized by listening or watching such type of issues.
For Example: IN 1st video when the kids are asked to draw fighterpilot ,surgeon…most of the kids drawn men as fighterpilot and surgeon .This shows how the mentality of the kids are...
“An activity can be done based on the ability of the person but not based on the gender or racism.”
“Its high time to change the way of thinking.”

ReplyDeleteHello
Gender stereotypes have been exitsing for a long time. By being silent when faced with sexist and misogynist attitude we are only allowing more and more people to get hurt.Instead of pointing out the negative stereotypes, we need to fight back. We really need to think out of the box to help resolve this problem in the near future (even though almost the entire society have shaped their thoughts in a particular way).
My cousin once said "Gender parity is not just good for women but it's good for the whole society". We should respect everyone irrespective of their career choices.
The aim of art is to represent not the outward appearance of things but their inward significance. A persons character is much more important than looks. Nowadays every man wants to marry a fair woman with specific qualifications. But most people look at women as a market product rather than a human. I strongly believe in this quote my dad once told me :
"Character is the foundation of all worthwhile success"
Whether your black or white does not matter .But to survive in this world we all need to be good human beings.
Both racism and gender bias have rooted in our lives for a long time.
ReplyDeleteIn every children, their lives and decisions are influenced by their parents unconsciously. There are more stereotypes than just gender bias and racism. Though I personally haven't experienced any of these issues, my mom has experienced gender bias. Just because she is a woman she was not allowed to follow her dream of becoming a teacher. Instead she was married to my father and she became home-maker. The thing is even her parents didn't approve her of becoming a teacher. All of this because of the mindset of the people then. I'm not saying this has changed completely these days but improvements have occurred.
As for racism I don't think me or anyone I personally know have been affected by that. Everyone can hope for a better world but only hope cannot change anything. So at least we can try to start the change from our children.

(Name: Jeena Rachel , 2018103030)
ReplyDeleteEver since i can remember, I’ve always been told to do certain things, behave a certain way, simply because I’m a girl.
“Why can’t i wear this?” “Because you’re a girl, Jeena. You shouldn’t show so much skin.”
“Can i apply to this college in Pune. It sounds amazing.” “No Jeena, its so far away from home. It wouldn’t be safe for girls.”
“Why don’t you ever tell Jonathan to put his feet down when he’s sitting on the couch? Why is it always only me?” “Girls should know how to sit properly, Jeena.”
At school, the football ground was always reserved for the boys. In a similar manner, most dance routines almost always involved only girls. This probably happened because not many girls were into sports and not many guys were into dancing. But again, why is that? From a very young age, our interests have been slowly molded based on what people around us expect us to like.
And the saddest part of all is that we ourselves stereotype others. For example, think of a fashion model. The first person that comes to your mind is probably a stick-thin, extremely tall girl. Think of a gangster. You probably thought of an African American man with a gold chain around his neck.
The root of the issue is that we simply do not think hard enough. We accept things for what they are. How often do we question what we are told? How often do we question what we read? How often do we actually think about why we are doing what we are doing and why we hold certain opinions?
We forget that each and every individual is unique and different in their own way. Gender never can and never will determine whether a person is outgoing or shy, loves sports or loves music. We are all so much more than a gender or a caste or a skin color. So let us all strive to treat each other like that and see people for who they actually are.
In the first video , the teacher asked the students to sketch pictures of fire fighters, surgeons(professions in which predominantly men are present).Almost all the children (aged between 5 and 7) sketched male fire fighters, surgeons and astronauts.By convention, children right from the time they begin to think, they are taught that men are supposed to do jobs which require some kind of physical fitness. The convention that women are not supposed to do certain kind of jobs is becoming false these days.Women must chase their passion and do the work they love.
ReplyDeleteWe always have an opinion that white is considered to be clean and pure while black is considered to be disgusting. In the second video two dolls were kept on a table. One was a white doll and the other is a black doll. The children assumed the white doll to be pretty. This is because women who have white complexion are portrayed beautiful in media. The children get used to it and almost every child has a prejudiced opinion that white people are beautiful.Even parents want their child to have a fair complexion! Thus we must not judge a person or a thing by its appearance.
I've seen parents of this generation, being biased. Mostly they don't object their sons driving two wheeler to college, but this isn't the case with their daughters

Gender stereotyping is one of the most controversial topics
ReplyDeleteOn seeing the first video i feel that Children learn about gender roles very early in their lives, probably before they are 10 years old and sometimes before they enter school. The behaviors that form these gender roles often go unnoticed but their effect is immeasurable.
Since most of us have grown in a male chauvinistic society. I feel that gender bias cant be removed easily in India
According to a survey India is the second most racist country
On seeing the video I was shocked to see the children influenced by the ideology of racism at such a young age.
Discriminating an individual on the basis of color is not acceptable
Racism has spread its wings in
India through the creation of communities. Due to a large regional diversity, we find communities pitted up against each other ideologically, or for resources. There have been many cases of North Indian discriminating against those from the South(I have faced such a situation)
These type of actions can be controlled by framing new laws against the people who does discrimination(racism or any) of any type
it may be gender, caste or color...

ReplyDeleteGender bias begins from home. Even from our childhood, girls are given dolls to play, but boys are not allowed to play with them.Pink colour is generally associated with girls. Boys are taught how they are never supposed to cry. "why are you crying .are you a girl ?",this is the common dialogue they encounter in their life. This kind of things make us biased.
Also my friend's brother had an incident in his life. This is due to prejudgement.
On his first day of job , he went late.
The manager had an bad impression on
him. The manager scolded him for coming late on his first day of job. Because of this, there will me some misunderstanding between them. The manager will always scold him even if had not done mistakes.
After one year, he got the chance for on-site.
But the manager did not recommend him. He written his character was average in his conduct certificate. So he missed the chance because the manager prejudiced him.
It is harder to break prejudice than atom

Stereotyping is really unfair and the above two videos have clearly shown how even those small kids were impacted by this inevitable threat.I do believe that it is the responsibility of parents in bringing gender equality, they should treat their children equally in every possible way.The defining of so called "male jobs " and the "female jobs" must be completely excluded, let the dads do the dishes and moms drive the cars. I have experienced this kind of gender bias in my own family. Whenever my brother wants to go outing with his friends he would be permitted , but when it comes to me it is a strict "no".Initially I just used to think this is how girls should be ,to be confined within the four walls .But later I realized that it was totally unfair. It was well said that " Don't tell your daughter not to go out, tell your son to behave well". So parents play a major role in eliminating gender stereotyping.
ReplyDeleteThe second video about racism was heart touching especially when the little girl said that was offended
Most of us are obsessed with this fair skin and it is considered as the beauty standard .But it is not at all fair.No one should be judged based on his appearance. There are many people and even some of my friends who suffered and are still suffering from inferiority complex because of this judgemental society which keeps on pointing out their complexions as a barrier. The media and film industry plays a crucial role in encouraging these fair skins. The advertisements promoting fairness creams further instill the superiority of fair complexion.
Skin color can not be changed as it is genetic and we must learn to embrace this feature .We must learn to love ourselves and that self confidence is the real beauty of oneself.
Surely if each and every individual of the society strives to bring a change , perceives in a different way, these stereotypes can be easily shattered.
Thank you

ReplyDeleteWhile we are supposed to gender stereotypes, young people are particularly susceptible to them when forming an understanding of their place in society and potential. In the first video, the teacher asked the students to sketch firefighters , surgeon and a pilot.Even though the classroom consists of many girl children, almost all of them draw the male pilot and firefighters.Right from the small age, they assume and believe that teachers and nurses are women, and that pilots, doctors and electrician are men..Gender stereotypes determine people's about themselves and others. Our beliefs about ourselves are very important in shaping all kinds of important decisions that we choose in our life.
After seeing this video,I remember that when I asked my 4 year old niece ,if she would also go to office like dad when she grows up.She said:"I am a girl.Only boys go to office.Papa is a boy,so he goes to office .Mumma is a girl and she stays at home.So even I will stay at home."Stereotypes are passed from generation to generation.Kids learn more from their parents and teachers when they go to school.
In the second video, when the children are asked to choose who is good?.They suddenly showed the doll which is in white colour. This kind of racial beliefs in young minds will affect their future.
We the youngsters of the world, take steps to eliminate these stereotypes and racism.I think the classroom is an ideal environment to raise their awareness about these stereotypes and racism and encourage critical analysis in students , so that they are equipped to come up with their own conclusions...

Ya..Every people has their own stereotypes..I had a incident in my life which serves as a best reflection for stereotype and bias..The scenario is restriction for my cousin brother to become police, since he was short and not much more fit,but i know that he was energetic and more active to become police. And the other one is In my childhood, iused to attend karate class..one of the boy in that class, who is very tall and has wide body structure..so the coach paid more attention to that guy..but my frd Syed who is not so much fit,but he had better guts to fight and power to self defense..but his external, fix him as a weak guy in other's mind.Eventhough,i would came to know that he is powerful at the tutorial fight..

According to me stereotyping means a generalized thoughts about a particular group of people.
The group may refer to particular gender/racial/caste.
This types of stereotypes have a part of our life through years.
we haven't thought about this in particular as we are humans we don't think of about anything until unless it happens to us or our surrounding.
I have thought about this because I have come across many kinds of stereotypes in my life .My schoolmates sister have scored good marks in her Hslc exams she dreamed of doing
degree in university but her parents didn't allow her to go .They said being a girl its enough
to study at any local colleges nearby. This is a kind of gender bias this has been in our country
for years.Another kind of incident that everyone come across in our life is reservation for castes
that government even support. A particular category(caste) can score less and get jobs/admission and another category
have to score more .This is a kind of stereotyping.Hope we would come out of the bias and think wisely...
Stereotyping has been deeply rooted into our veins. Gender stereotyping is the most common issue that parents and society has unknowingly ingrained into a child's mind.
ReplyDeleteI would like to share an example which i came across. I have an elder brother who has a successful career in IT. my relatives and my mom often say things like " since he is a boy, he will take care of us(parents), you dont have to struggle so much, just get a degree for sake"(although this turned out to be the best motivation). Pink colour, teddy bears and chocolates are not chosen as favourite colour but it has been imposed on a girl child at her young age itself. Video games are not only for boys, girls who hate candy crush and binge on online violent games exist in this world too..
Another example is every thought of a North Indian that we love to wear lungi everywhere, we add coconut in every food including beverages and we have darker skin tone. In the same way we have a thought that north indians all have chapati for all their meals and they all have fair complexion. This is not true..thoughts like these are not our fault. We have been taught like this. This cannot be swept easily but can surely be minimized. Let the changes begin from "us".

ReplyDeleteThe following two videos show how the thoughts prevailing in the society have inflicted on the minds of small children.
I personally haven't experienced any incident wherein I have become of victim of the bias or stereotypes prevailing in the society. But I would like to share the incident that happened to my cousin sister.
She had a craze for bikes. Her passion was bike racing. Her dream was to participate in bike races and show up her talent to the world. She could ride bikes very well. But her parents didn't extend any support to her. They tried to manipulate her by stating that bike racing is not meant for her. It is meant for the boys. They also discouraged her by saying that she can't succeed in her life,if she goes about with bike racing. One more thing is,the forum for bike racing for girls is not available in many places, especially in our country.Ultimately, she couldn't do anything, but give up on her dream.
This kind of bias are a serious constraint, especially for the girls.Atleast individual parents should think out of the box to let their child go about with his/her passion.
Thank you.
I was overwhelmed after watching both the videos. The videos portray how children are affected by stereotypes and bias at a very young age.
ReplyDeleteOur society judges people based on what they wear, what work they do and what they look like. Racism is a worldwide problem. Some people believe they are against racism but they behave otherwise. It is particularly prevalent in schools where the children face verbal abuse and physical abuse. It is a known fact that children learn how to behave physically and emotionally from the adults in the family. Awareness must be created among public through education. "One must treat others the way they themselves want to be treated". If this quote is followed by people there will be a huge change in the society.
Gender stereotypes is prevalent in most of the countries. Men and women are judged by the society for different reasons. Men are expected to work and is considered as the bread winner of the family whereas women are expected to nurture the family. Some women have broken this stereotype and have succeeded in their dreams and also excelled in their lives. But there are still people who believe in these and doesn't allow the girls of their home to pursue their dreams. Not only women but men also face such stereotypes. This can be changed only when every individual of the society realises the ill effects and act upon it. In fact these stereotypes result in a major loss to the society itself.
In my opinion men and women are not equal but they are unique in their own ways. They are different but one is not less than the other in anyway.
We are living in the society where beauty is determined by color respect is determined by money and education is determined by marks!!
Thankyou!!!

Hi this Sai Vignesh(2018103584)
ReplyDeleteIn these videos we have seen how the stereotypes impact the children at the very younger age.
Stereotypes based on gender and racism are prevalent all over the world.
A sad thing happened to my sister too based on gender stereotype. She was not allowed to study beyond my hometown and that she should come home before 7 pm.Even though i don't like this kind of stereotyping, I cannot find a solution for it because my age mattered at that stage.
It was that white people always speak truth is one of the worst behaviour of the mankind i've seen. One of my friends in school was teased based on colour.
Because of these stereotype, common individuals are affected. We should move on from these kind of stereotypes to create a progressive world
Thank you
Hi there!
ReplyDeleteThis is NITHISHKUMAR S.
At first, Gender discrimination is not an immediate issue. It had its eventual growth for ages. At first, Men and women were equal. Since men have comparatively more potential than women, they wanted to protect women and it was continued. Then men started to feel superior to women. Eventually, women also came under the domination of men. There comes the gender discrimination issue. Article 15 of the Indian constitution states that the state shall not discriminate against any citizen on the grounds of only sex.
I have come across a gender discrimination issue in my school days. My school principal has planned to do camp activities where night stay in the school was one of the parts of it. The notion of the camp was to bring awareness about their hometown to the students. Since the students were asked to stay in the school, security measures were taken with almost care. As a student, everyone has to stay in school. As a citizen of this society, every student has to know about their hometown.
After this circular has passed, parents of some of the girls said to the principal that they won't allow their children to stay at night. They don't even want their children to attend the camp. After two days, we got a circular. In that circular, it is mentioned that only boys have to attend the camp.
Parental care is not the one to be blamed. Children learn from their parents. Parents have to extend their mindsets from gender stereotypes.
Colour discrimination have to be demolished. "Beauty lies in the heart".

There is a lot we understand from these videos. It shows how our minds have been corrupted from a small age.
ReplyDeleteGender bias was a very common thing in our country about 20 years ago. My mother's sister(my aunt) had experienced it. My mother has a master's degree in English and my aunt has a master's degree in chemistry. Both had passion for teaching. After marriage my father allowed my mother to pursue her passion and helped her become a teacher. But it was not the same with my Aunt. My uncle did not like my aunt going to a job so he did not allow her to pursue it. He believed that only the male should go to a job. Now after 20 years , whenever my uncle face a financial crisis ,that is the only time he thinks that he should have allowed my aunt to pursue her passion.
Another bias which i have personally experienced is that which is very common in our state particularly. Most people has their own opinion about a person by simply knowing their hometown. For example, most people think that I (from Tirunelveli) will be with a machette in my hand whenever i am in my hometown. Another assumption is that I would be having 'Halwa' for breakfast, lunch and dinner. This is totally unacceptable.
These kind of bias are inflicted into our minds by movies that we see, our parents and much more factors. Our minds have been already corrupted. So atleast let the change begin from our children.
Thank you

ReplyDeleteThis stereotype is based on the Observation I made in my 18 years.
I have observed that most women don't love Maths. So,If we take a survey of maths teachers it will be mostly men not women.
I discussed about this with my sister.
She made her point that in maths the class topper is a boy not a girl.
MY OBSERVATION HOLDS TRUE!
I'm GOKULA KANNAN
ReplyDeleteThis stereotype is about Brands. There is common bias that NOKIA is the best brand among others. Now things have changed.Even though Nokia phones are Costly and not worthy as before Some people are buying it Because it is "NOKIA".So some stereotypes are used as a tool to make money.
Discrimination is there everywhere. The above two videos are just a testimony to the fact. People put the blame on the society saying that 's how it is, that's how it works and themselves become a part of it. Now we could see a wide range of movies coming out speaking about discrimination, stereotypes, corruption or which speaks about "good things", but people turn a blind eye to it. They don't seem to care about it. But when there's a film where the female lead drinks or speaks bad words then they suddenly come to their senses coming out on those films saying it is not good for the society and they don't need such kind of films where the female whom they consider as "gods" do bad things. Whereas when any male stars do such things it is considered as a mass act.
ReplyDeleteAs many people pointed out these kind of things needs to be sorted in home itself.
Parents need to teach their child to do what is right instead of asking them to do what the society things is right. But what it the parents themselves are the part of the society we are talking about. What if they too want us to do want others want us to do. So it is just about us. About how strong we are to not fall in the same category as our parents if they are a part of it. About how strong we are to defy the odds to become unique and be a part of much better society

ReplyDeletewhen the instructor is asked to do some drawings about some character like astronauts, surgeons, doctors etc ...all of the kids in that class had assumed that we should began to a draw a men professional in a specific field as they had liked.Because drawing a men picture is much easier than a women...since most of the women have long hair and some smart looks,etc..hence to paint some complicated picture gives them a serious difficulty and takes much time to complete the painting....Hence most of kids have liked to draw men picture..
on seeing the second video ,each of the human beings dominate themself and assume that they are not suitable for a particular field .so they could fail to express to the outside world .As a result of this ,They can't live a better live ,as they have wanted to live .We should not care much about the outside world. If you done like that, you could definitely waste your time to adjust to our surroundings.

It is actually very much depressing to see how stereotyping has a deep impact on these young minds. Even right from our childhood we are being manipulated as how things should be. If acted against it we are called anti-social!
ReplyDeleteAccording to me, no one has the right to judge an individual based on his/her gender,religion,complexion,caste,job.....
People should actually change their whole perception about the world.
We need to stand out of the stereotyping hierarchy. We just need to do what we want to do, what feels right for us, be an example to others and the best version of ourselves.
We need to fight back stereotyping when it hits us. Let the change start from us.
Personal experience:
This happens often to me. Wherever I go, I get judged based on my religion. I have myself seen, my works being overlooked by others just because of my religion. I wish this never happens to me again.
Let's fight back stereotyping!
Thank you!

Hi! I am srijaa. In the first video the teacher asked the students to draw the pictures of firefighter, astronaut, surgeons. Most of them think that would be the men. This is what the stereotype of gender. Generally we love to stay in a relationship with a man who is responsible and mature. We used to see our father as our super hero from childhood because of his fitness. That impact us these kind of jobs are only suitable for men.we assume that the boys are strong, brave and physically fit. They can handle situations in an organized manner and matured. Maturity is often linked to stability. For parents provide their children from problems is first and foremost . In such things males suitable for this. This is a kind of stereotype we have from our childhood.
ReplyDeleteIn the second video the stereotype of skin colour was totally wrong. We have to change the mentality of that children. The colour of skin does not define knowledge of the person, does not define the value, does not define the character, does not define the person and everyone is more than the colour of their skin .
"Appearances are deceptive"
"The colour of the skin is just, that a colour"

Hi All !!!
ReplyDeleteI am soumya...(2018103596)
From the first video it is ver shocking to see that kids who are 5-7 years old are biased...But how??...To answer this question we need to trace back to our families...Family is the first school where the child begins to learn...Bias has its root in our families...Bias begins the moment a boy is taught to play with TRUCKS and a girl is given a BARBIE doll...It is a general belief that only men can do rigorous physical work and women are soft...But I strongly disagree this fact..
One of my friends who topped the board exams with a high cut off was denied the oppurtunity to study at CEG...Not because she was incapable..Not beacuse her parents can't afford....Not beacuse she can't cope with the new environment ....BUT beacuse she is a GIRL!!!...This is not the case only with her !!!!
Another case is, when there comes a time where it is necessary to take care of the child, it is always expected from the mother to quit the job and take care of the child!! Why can't the father do it???...Why is it not expected from the father to do so??
Not only women..Men also experience such situations .For instance , if a man wishes to become a nurse , or a receptionist or a teacher ,he is ridiculed stating that these jobs are not masculine enough.....
In the second video when given an opportunity to choose between two toys , most of the kids chose the white doll. This is an example of implicit bias.Racism is not born, it is created.Nobody is a born racist. These practices are rooted in our daily lives so deeply that we follow them at a subconscious level..It is painful to note that appearances are given prime importance in our society.
It is sad to note that even today people discriminate each other based on skin color. The actresses in the movies and the models in the advertisements are usually fair....Being fair is considered beautiful!!!BUT...Is it true???
Bias and stereotype are not anything new. They are practiced since time immemorial. The task before us is to eliminate them and build an open-minded bias free society , discrimination free society...
" Be the change that you want to see in this world",going by gandhiji's words I would like to conclude by saying that any change could be made possible if and only if each one of us come together...Let us start by changing ourselves and slowly the whole world will change..I wish that atleast the future generation shouldn't have such a topic to debate upon....
With that hope I sign off
-Thank you.....;)
Actually the girl was not allowed to study at CEG by her parents...They didn't want to spend money on girl's education...
DeleteI would like to add one more point...Usually in an Indian wedding ,the groom is expected to be older than the bride...Why is it so???Bollywood actress Priyanka chopra who married a boy younger than her was trolled for this...
-2018103627
ReplyDeleteFrom the first video we observed that most of the children had drawn pictures of fire fighter, doctor and pilot as men .In their point of view those jobs were only done by men as they had seen in many movies, cartoons etc.so By knowingly or unknowingly we are making them to show bias. The other thing I observed in many families is when a girl is born, their family members won't be happy for that child whereas a boy is born, they feel very happy and will keep a party to celebrate the child's birth. If we change our mindset then we can expect change from our future generation.
Racism is another stereotype existing in our society. Many people even though having talent and interest in a particular field ,(mainly in acting, anchoring etc)are not getting chance to expose their talent because of their external outfit.
The talent of individuals shouldn't judge by their external appearance.
Colourism is one of the deep rooted issue of India or should I say almost all asian countries, predominately south and east asian countries. It's kind of funny to know that Indians are most racist/colourist towards Indians, this whole colourism concept is so self-sabotaging. Also, it's absolutely disgusting when highly influential celebrities like SRK endorse and promote those so-called fairness products. "Skin lightening" appears to be favourite keyword for marketing all indigenously manufactured skincare products even though phenotypic traits are solely determined by genetics . Even though people of generation Z boast their prejudice-free opinion, the fair skin obsession grew to become a multi-billion dollar industry and statistics show that this trend is ever-increasing. By the way,Statistics don't lie :) Regional movies never portray a darker skinned girl as leading actress or whatever. Kids watch those ridiculous TV commercials where girl/boy of dark skin achieve great success after applying a cream that claims to enhance their skin complexion, I wonder what happened to talent or skill which actually gets the job done... this way logic and common sense goes straight out of the window. And these kids, experience halo effect where their perceptions are heavily distorted and interpret situations negatively contributing to feelings of inferiority. Such discrimination is not only limited to skin colour but also other physical features like height for men, caste differences and it goes on.
ReplyDeleteGender stereotypes are everywhere. Even career choices are gender-stereotyped and people expect students to gravitate towards those jobs and such kids are considered ideal.
I guess, all these stereotypes and false assumptions can be diminished in a society if every individual analyse and change their beliefs. It's easy to blame the media but think about it, media really just captures the collective interests of the society to generate wider audience...

ReplyDeleteApart from Incidents, right from the childhood , children should be moulded and motivated to maintain gender equality and they should be trained in a way such that they should believe that gender is not an obstacle for choosing a profession.the parents should also add value for the beliefs and ethics of children regarding gender equality.
Right from childhood, children should be groomed such a way to validate people by skill competance and performance/good,bad instead of their colour.maturity level of the children should be developed in such a way to avoid racism,by proper parental guidance.
ReplyDeleteBy analyse the first video,we can say that "society is deciding what a gender want to be".The best example I came across in my life is that all the rivers are having the name of the female gender. In many country eliminating gender bias is the basis of many laws.despite these efforts, social activist argue that total gender parity remains a far off goal. For example, the biased assumption that girl's sports are less important than boy's sports lead to an inequality in funding and access to facilities. The best example I came across in my life is that all the rivers are having the name of the female gender. In many country eliminating men are expected to do work but women are expected to take care their family in this society. But this type of gender bias are changing nowadays. The convention that women are not supposed to do certain kind of jobs is becoming false these days.Racism is discriminating others by their skincolor. In movies a fair, white girl is considered as a heroine but
a girl who is in black is considered as a heroine's girlfriend. We are in the society where beauty is marked by colour.we often came across the quote APPEARANCES CAN BE DECEPTIVE.So dont judge a book by its cover

ReplyDeleteFrom the video it is clear that every child grows in an environment of gender bias.So they feel that boys can do every jobs and girls are fit for only particular jobs. This is because it is inherited from their ancestors.
So parents should teach their children that all jobs are fit for girls and not only boys can do everything.
My friend's cousin had gone through a situation like this.she studies well. so apparently after completing her schooling she got a seat in a good college. But her parents didn't want her getting admitted in that college as the fees was too high. Her parents didn't want to spend more money for a girl child as they have to save money for her wedding. In the same case, her father wanted his son to study there even though he is not good at studies.
I feel this kind of parents should start believing that if their girl children are allowed to study and get a job they could earn more than enough money for her own wedding. So parents should teach their girl to stand on her own feet instead of cutting her wings in the name of marriage.
"Appearances can be deceptive".So we should not judge a person by his/her colour.Black is only a colour and not a character.
Hi everyone!
ReplyDeleteBy watching these two videos, it is clearly evident that the kids are totally misguided by the society. Stereotyping creates a negative impact on children's minds. This plays a major role in shaping their individuality as they grow up.
Society today holds many stereotypes and one of them is the gender bias. Since the beginning of time, gender has played a big role in how one acts and how one is looked upon in the society. Unfortunately, society expects a certain behaviour from everyone. For instance, men are expected to go to work while women stay at home to nurture their children. Though this thought is slowly changing nowadays, it is not completely eliminated from people's minds. If a man stays at home and takes care of the children, the society starts questioning him. Ultimately there are several gender stereotypes that limits the way men and women express their true identity.
We, as the younger generation should start changing our perception of stereotypes to make our society a better one.
Thank you.

Hey guys!
ReplyDeleteThe video posted indicate the bitter truth of bias which we face everyday in our life.It is not only girls who face such type of stereotype, even men are restricted from choosing professions like nurse, caretakers even though they like those sort of jobs. The most annoting fact is when we Google out 'jobs suitable for women' we could see search results that show secretary, nurse, elementary school teacher I couldn't see a doctor or engineer among the search results. So the society has predefined that women are able to do only those sort of jobs.
There is a preconception that dark skinned people are introverts, uneducated and poor while we believe that dark skinned guys are extremely smart and extroverts. There is no scientific proof which relates our complexion and our behavior. This is also the main reason why companies that sell fairness products flourish.Even in films the actors can be dark but the actresses are fair skinned. The modern society has brought an outlook that women must be fair skinned only then they are beautiful.
There are times when I have judged people based on their looks.I realised my mistake only when others judged me based on the same criteria.
It is now necessary for us to change our perceptions. It starts from the early stages of growth of a child.I believe that atleast our kids will be free from such bias and prejudice.

Unlike any western countries, people, here, in my country do not give a weird look when I tell them my muslim name Afzal.
My friend is have black skin tone. Many people think he is bully in class,But he scores first rank.
"Appearances can be deceptive".We dont judge people by their color.
We want a world without this........
Next stereotypical nature of this world. This world only think man can dominate womens . Womens can do anything .Infact womens spend more time than mans for work. They are very passionate.Just Plz change your mentality and let make a new world.

ReplyDeleteEvidently these two videos are some examples of how stereotypes influence us. In my experience I saw gender bias happening in my school that too in a very large scale!. In our school , a very respected and reputed one, The higher secondary girls and boys had a leisure hour every week. The boys were allowed to play in the ground whereas the girls were asked to yoga. Frustrated, I reported to my teacher and what she said was, if you girls were allowed to play, you would rather sit down in shade and waste the entire hour. This raged us all. We literally fought against that mindset that girls are lazy and inactive. Similarly, only boys has extra classes every weekend. We asked why and they said, " you girls can study easily, well at least you'll byheart. But boys cany study without understanding, and boys give better results than you ". I literally started to hate going to school . I saw such levels of gender bias which upsetted me so much. ( But maybe that bias motivated us and our school topper was a girl ;) )

ReplyDelete1) These two videos are very effective in it's content....I too had
noticed some...My friend dharshini had
loved participating in games
conducted in our village during pongal
festival. And she was a star player and won almost all prizes....At the same time,
my brother had also participated in some
games and won rarely one or two...After
few years ,when dharshini aged up to 15,
She was not permitted to participate in games in front of the villagers,by her parents. But my brother still going to the ceremonyonly for enjoyment.
Here,my friend's confidence level
was crushed by her own parents!!! Then
how she can face this competitive world
amidst all struggles in the society....
And this is ,I noticed from my experience..To get out of this,
all those pre- determined formats and traditions should be thrown off...
2). From the 2nd video,it's clear that" the inner qualities can't be judged by outer appearance". Because it results only in wrong assumptions...This kind
of myths makes the children feel low about themselves from their childhood....
Then, how could they grow as a confident
people and express their skills efficiently
in this dynamic world????
Parents can change this mentality of their children and also good environment contribute some....
--- THANK YOU....

ReplyDeleteI faced a similar kind of situation when I went to malaysia .During Immigration the officer made fun of me by asking some disgusting personal questions which weren't related to immigration .After that I noticed that the officers were doing this to all the Indians who came there .I was discriminated just because I am an Indian. And I also found out there is a lot of racism in malaysia.
ReplyDeleteSome of the people in malaysia think that Indians are bad people and the society also has raised them like that.We couldn't also blame them as we also think that the people in pakistan are bad and we were raised like that. Still some people think that Muslims are terrorists.
So its the society and people who make us think like that.
To avoid these things we must be unique and do what is right,so that atleast our future generations will become unique.

ReplyDeleteEveryone come across gender stereotypes in their lives. Most of the people accept and live with such stereotypes. But some thinks'why'and seeks answer.Such people find harder to fit the society. I fortunately have my Dad who promotes gender equality between me and my brother. I didn't come across any huge gender inequality problem as I argue to any extent to get what I want. But some common gender stereotypes prevail in my home too. My brother asks me to sweep, cook and help my Mom , but when I asks him to do the same, he replies that such household works are meant only for girls. What's upto me is "if a thing is right , both boy and girl can do it...but when a thing is wrong, both must not do it... whatever it is.."
Coming to looks...Most of the time I was misjudged with my looks(not colour)... Even in school, me and my friend are rejected in sports as we are looking as such we are not strong enough. Coming to college life,at first most of the people had a wrong assumption about me with my looks , but not now...Even now people have a completely wrong assumption as I am a serious book worm... Unless they talk to me , they don't know my jovial character...."Beauty depends on the eyes which see"..... To me, a person who I like seems beautiful. If I find a fault in a person's character , whatever their looks may be , the are ugly to me...
Thank you....
Video1:This video shows that even children are no exception to gender stereotype. Its our fault that even children feel men are superior to women in many ways and the society is to be blamed for that. One such example for gender stereotype is the burden faced by women at home. Almost everyone think that household chores are to be done only by women. This perspective must be changed. Eventhough ,man is the head of the family ,it doesnt mean he has to work only outside to run the family. He has to support his wife by sharing her burden. Nowadays, women have also started working to share the husband's burden in earning money. So,its completely unfair to limit women's potential. When it comes to gender bias,i have a similar experience in my life. I joined boxing in NSO camp. We were only four girls who joined boxing. All others were boys. One day, attendance was not taken for us. We reported to one of the seniors. He gave a blank smile which irritated us a lot. He repeated the same question" Whether all four of you truly belong to boxing?". He didnt completely believe us . Such things keep happening in our day to day life. Eventhough these are small incidents ,they show how the people's minds are soaked with gender bias thoughts.
ReplyDeleteVideo2:"Beauty lies in the heart ". But its a shame that people relate beauty to our appearance. For example,we dont mind sitting near an ordinary person but we think more than twice when it comes to sitting near a shabby looking person. There should be no such deceptive thoughts in our minds. Hence our view on beauty must be given a different perspective.
These kinds of bias are found everywhere. We are blindly manipulated by these notions. I have faced the situation of gender bias in few instances. In my home the kind of freedom given to my brother to pursue his education is not completely given to me. He is allowed to take up any career in his life completely of his choice. But when it comes to me , only a safe , typical women centered career is permitted. I was not allowed to do my degree outside India. But when it comes to his work, anything becomes acceptable. We are not given a choice to pursue our dreams , gender becomes an obstacle. Pursuing studies in abroad is also a far cry. In many occasions , I have seem my relatives sterotyping how a girl should behave. In a broad case , it becomes a woman's mistake for getting physically abused. Nobody blames a man for his misbehavior. Women become the victim also for society's misconceptions. All these incidents impacted me in a way that , I started looking everything in such biased way.I became quite ambitious towards my thoughts and started raising questions and argumented if I came across any such situation and it started from home. Those racism prevail even now because of the people's perspective toward it. The solution to such issues is a change in brought up of posterity. Kids should be taught in such a way to look everybody as equal. All those typical stereotypes should be erased from minds of people.
ReplyDeleteI have occasionally come across stereotyping people and mostly they are older people... So I just ignore it.. but racism... The second video reminds me of something very bad which happened to my cousin's friend. My cousin lives in California. His friend Derek is a black.Being an Asian American he faces people who bully him because of his origin.. but not to the extent what Derek faces.. One day,he was finishing his pre-college classes and heading home with my cousin.. suddenly two policemen came and harassed Derek and asked him to show some ID.. when he showed his ID they left him, they dint even care to apologise. This could have happened to my cousin.Last Year,Two cops shot some African American guy based on some suspicions... Now recently in El Paso,Texas and Columbus,Ohio there has been continuous mass shootings. Most of the victims who were shot were black. Why such hatred?.Well what do u expect to happen in the country which voted for a dumb-white supremacist Trump. This kind of racist hatred is totally wrong. Upcoming generations should not be bestowed with racist thoughts, they should be brought up saying that everyone is equal in this world. This should not happen to anyone anymore

Mostly people dint know wat they mean unless it is said to them.. They believe in a world they think it is right.. Stereotyping is also a kind of tradition or maybe i wud say a superstition which has been practiced my many people in this world without the knowledge that Stereotyping affects people. I hate people asking about a caste and deciding their behavior by caste. Racism, another thing i faced in school days;only fair girls and boys are bright others the institution doesnt care.. When people understands that things they do hurts.. A lot!! But i know one thing to do. I wud raise the nxt generation without any stereotypes.

ReplyDeleteIn the first video, the children had drawn mostly the picture of a man, it's obvious that still there are mostly men are working in these jobs.Women had been fixed to the mindset that they should not be involved in these Jobs but it is gradually changing now.Women are stepping into every field and sooner there will be day that women are equal in number to that of men involved in these Jobs.
In the second video, children are asked to say which doll is good. Many of them loved white doll than black doll. Some of them told black as they pretend to be black. It's not just the white people hate them, even they don't want them to be black. That attitude is changing in modern world. Therefore Racism is diminishing gradually.
